One stick of RAM died, how to replace? (And has anyone used G.Skill Warranty?)

Thread Starter
One stick of my RAM died today (I'm assuming since when I removed it and left the other, my computer booted back up normally), and I'm trying to figure out how to replace it.

I currently have this model of G.Skill RAM: F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL.

I would like to simply replace the one 4GB stick that died, rather than spend twice the money to buy another set. However, I can't find the same model on Newegg. They have a VERY similar model: F3...-4GBRL which seems to be the same as one stick from the -8GBRL series.

I know essentially nothing about timings or anything, but from what I can tell, the only difference between these is the addition of -2N at the end.

My current memory's timings: 9-9-9-24

The one that I hope to replace it with (and save $25): 9-9-9-24-2N

What does this 2N mean? Can I use it with the stick I have that still works?

I've also seen that G.Skill has a lifetime limited warranty on their RAM. I didn't change the timings or voltage for the RAM, so there is no reason why it wouldn't be covered, right? I did overclock the CPU, but did nothing to the RAM. I've read their policy and it seems to say that as long as the "operating environment" for the RAM is normal, it will be covered. Does overclocking the CPU count as changing that? Does anyone know if they are good (and quick) about upholding their warranty? I would obviously prefer to use that rather than buy a new stick (or two) or RAM.

Thanks for the help!

Yes G.Skill will replace the ram. I had to RMA a 4gb stick a little while ago and I can't remember if they paid one or two way shipping, but it was quick and easy. I got the same model stick back, no hassle.

BTW the 2N model would work. But you should RMA.

Since you've used your RAM at rated frequency, timings and voltage and did not damage it physically, there is no reason why G.SKill would denie your RMA.
As you bought your memory as a 2x4Gb kit, you will have to send both modules back to G.Skill and they will replace them with another set.
If you want them to replace only one module, it's best to let them know in advance since they usually expect both modules to arrive.

In Europe, G.Skill RMA work rather quick, the replacement is usually shipped out within a week of them getting the returns.

yes usally they do want the whole kit back when you RMA. G.Skill have very good CS so you shouldnt have any problems with RMA.

I only sent one module and there were no questions asked. Of course, in the RMA papers I wrote that only one was broken.

Below I've linked to the page with GSkill's RMA procedures. In it they ask that you return the entire kit if a module from a kit is defective, but it is not a requirement. However, if you don't send the kit, then they will not guarantee that your replacement module will work with the old modules. You run a big risk of receiving a replacement module that is using a different set of ICs than the ones in the original kit. Even if the default specs are the same, the overclocking characteristics of the modules may be different. That is why it probably makes sense to send in the entire kit and get a new matching kit back.

On the flip side, it may make sense to only send the defective module if, for example, you have a 3x2GB kit with some quality ICs that are EOL and you know that there is no chance of getting the same thing back and you can still utilize the remaining 2x2GB. In that case sending only the defective module and keeping the other 2 modules has merit.

Item #6 from the linked G.SKILL RMA Policy and Procedures reads as follows:

Please include all modules of a memory kit for RMA. Memory kits are tested together to ensure compatibility. We do not guarantee compatibility if the faulty module(s) is returned without the remaining modules of the same memory kit.
