Overclocking trouble with an HD 7870

Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7870 OC 1100MHZ 2GB 4.8GHZ GDDR5 DVI HDMI 2XMINIDP PCI-E Video Card

I recently purchased a card and installed the new Catalyst Control Center. I tried to overclock it through CCC (I don't know much about OCing, honestly) and my GPU Clock is at 1100 MHz and my memory clock is at 1200 MHz. There's also a "power control" setting and it's at 0%.

So, I pushed the GPU clock to 1400 MHz and the memory clock to 1450 MHz and I put the power control setting to 20% (it's maximum setting is 20%) and tried to play Far Cry 3 and Skyrim. Both times, I got a blue screen and my PC reset itself.

I don't know much about OCing a GPU but I take it that I put too much power into the card and OCed it too much. What's a good setting to put everything at past it's stock value so I can OC it "smoothly?"

1400 is way too much man dont forget the card is already factory overclocked to 1100! Try 1200/1250 on the core and that is with 1.3v the memory should not be a problem at 1450 at all no worries there.

I suggest you do little oc at a time, try 1150/1200/1250 and see if it works OK, test it with 3Dmark11 and heaven, maybe Metro2033 Benchmark (about 25 runs)

I usually increase 25mhz then test......download furmark to stress test your card.increase memory 1st find the limit, then gpu core find the limit, combine them stress test.or vise versa start with gpu core 1st dosent matter.whatch your temps! U will notice artifacts if u use furmark once uve reached your cards limit....back down a bit if u do and stress test again until stable.furmark is free and nothing really stresses your card as much as furmark.good luck report back:thumb:

I agree metro is very demanding game, incase u dont have it and don't wanna mess around with games for benching just download furmark.....it simulates 100 % stress on your card unlike a game will vary u know? U have diffrent presets so u can choose the settings u want.I wouldn't dare oc without furmark I love it! Just be careful and remember 2 things to look out for artifacts and temps.....try gpu-z or gpu shark to monitor real time temps......altough amd catalyst control schould be good too!

What driver verson are u currently using? I noticed 12.10 was really bad for me...if u aren't getting desired effect from your overclock if u switch to diffrent drivers that usually helps.....sorry for posting 3 times in a row.

To really open the card up you're gonna need a third party app to unlock voltage control on your card (That's different from Power Limit). CCC doesn't allow you to control voltage (if it does I haven't seen the option to do it). When you unlock voltage control you can get more overclocking benefits. BUT DO NOT go buck wild with the voltage like you did with the overclocks. lol. Try something like 1.2mv. Don't get crazy and bump it to 5mv or something ridiculous like that. If you do keep your fire extinguisher handy and type all you want now because you won't be typing on that computer any time soon.

I tried to OC it to that and I got blue screened, unfortunately. No big deal. I'll try some things. See if I can push it a tad.

I have the XFX 7870 and i have been playing with the OC on it for weeks now trying to push the max settings on it and the Ram gose all the way up to 1600 no prob the heat on the chips gets a little high but within reason but the gpu could not get it stable above 1200 mhz i seems that the 7870 will not OC above 1200 i tried MSI afterburner and CCC but nothing worked it will not go stable above 1200Mhz. There have been other people that have tried with the same card different brand and the results are all the same 1200mhz seems to be the cap on the 7870 if you do get it above 1200mhz stable let me know what your settings are so i can try as well and what apps you used to get it that high i have tried a few different drivers from AMD currently the best one that has seemed to work for me is 12.11 beta but it still has some issues in farcry 3 and i think it is just the game lost planet 2 benchmarks great and 3d marks advantage is really good too so let me know and i will keep trying thumb.gif

Boydwazup true at 1200 i run everything OK with a voltage of 1.23v but for benching it needs 1.3v to do 1250 core. I never pushed my mems more then 1500MHz ar eyou saing it does 1600 or more for 24/7? Or only benching?

i had to Increase my voltage to the about 1293Mv as well For the Gpu and the Ram i was able to run it at 1600 no worries even in strees test with Occt for 3 hrs i would not take it any further the temps are pushing 65c i dont like that much heat build up but at the same time i never game for longer then 2 hr I'm just not the as young as i used to be lol having kids slows ya down But i would say that the ram may go fasted then 1600Mhz stable but i have not tried as to the heat issues that i had. BTW I was using Msi Afterburner but i got rid of it after i went crossfire it did not like the crossfire for some reason now in CCC i cant get teh ram over 1500 as well but i know that when i had the one card it would do it no Prob makes me sad that Msi would not work with Crossfire but having 2 7870 in crossfire is working well im still tweaking and trying to get it all hammered out again i know i can get thoose speeds to work just have to tweak with it
