I had to drop down to the 970 board rather than go with the 990 to compensate for the extra cost of the CPU.

I'd get the 990 board + Deneb; AMD will probably come out with something better to stick in it..sometime;In the future.There's almost no game that can't be run on high with a 965 BE.With a new(990) motherboard..You will be upgrade ready.The 970 is a low-end board.

why? the 4300 is faster, overclocks higher, and isn't much more, 30-40 dollars at most. if you really hold off because 'something better is coming' you would always be doing that because stuff is always getting better.

I'm with the masses, since AMD has now decided not to give am3+ the axe and it will be in steamroller and possibly excavator, it should be the sub-$200, non-APU platform of choice.

I am NOT with the masses,I am grounded in reality.I seriously doubt there is a single thing FX 4300
does faster than a Deneb;Certainly not load Windows,or multitask.,or run SuperPi,or Wprime.It may be clocked faster,but it doesn't do as much work at that clockspeed as the older does in the same amount of time at a lower clockspeed.FX 6300 is a bit better,but it's still only 3 real cores and the same architecture.

I realize my position may be unpopular with some;However, The truth is the truth.

and the fx 4300 is a dual core not a quad core and the phemons are real quad cores

Go to TigerDirect and get yourself an OEM 965 for $75 and upgrade in the future.

I'm seeing around the net that you can grab that processor and an open box/refurbished MB for the same price as the FX-4300 (assuming you need an motherboard).

The truth? The truth is I gained 5 to 7 frames in bf3 on high compared to my 955 from my 6100 at stock (I got an 1100mhz oc from there) the truth is in my uses (namely gaming and video editing/rendering) the FX platform beat the p2s

someone seems to be thinking of bulldozer. THAT, had lower IPC. Piledriver has the same/ higher, so yes, it runs the OS faster, would run superpi faster in all likelihood, will run wprime faster. the only kind of things it might be slower in would be F@H or other floating point heavy things (of which there are few examples other then that). if it counts as one core of two depends on the definition, but what is FACT is that it performs VS Phenom as though 4 and a better four in most cases at that. everything you are saying was true for FX with bulldozer, possibly you have resentment at that, I do, but this is piledriver, not bulldozer. it is like the windows 7 to the windows vista, the gnome 3.4 to 3.0. it is a notable improvement. and to top it off, the Phenoms are 45nm and hog MUCH more power and overclock much lower (were talking max 4.0-4.2, more likely 3.8 on air to max 4.8-5.0 at least 4.6 on air). so overclocks better + higher IPC in most cases + similar price = how on earth could you recommend the phenom?

EDIT--

@alexNJ

and that with bulldozer.. now think of piledriver.

The scores on the bot show otherwise.Phenom II @ 4.1 Slightly edges out or more than slightly beats FX-6300 @ 5Ghz in everything.
