[HCW] Intel Haswell Overclocking Preview – The Return of BCLK Overclocking? - Page 4

i thought it was [dual core only- pentium], [dual core ht - i3], [quad core only-i5], [quad core ht -i7], however I'm not too well versed in intel stuff.
The biggest thing this provides for me is the ability to eek out the last Mhz of RAM speed, as I don't do anything more extreme cooling-wise than putting liquid-cooling radiators in the outdoor winter air (-5 to 15F).

If a i3 can overclock like any of the i5 and i7, you remove the point of buying a i5 (being cheaper).

There will be dual core variants of Haswell. Unless they just want to completely give the sub-$150 CPU market to AMD.

Good news if it works out like he predicts though.

One of the main reasons 1155 can't clock high bclks is the SATA ports, USB ports, PCIe/rest of uncore following the same bclk, I'd imagine fi the uncore follows a separate constant bclk multiplier or whatever, it'd be possible to get USB, SATA, etc on there too.

FYI, PCIe is actually part of the Uncore which is the stuff on the APU which isn't a CPU or GPU. (ie. The former Northbridge, which is PCIe, memory controller and a few small components)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
my speculation is that maybe intel are playing sneaky with the market. They will release the i7-4770K as both multiplier and BCLK unlocked while the i5-4570K and the i7-4670K would be only Multiplier unlocked, and possibly that the 4770k would be like 5% better in overclocking including the BCLK abilities. (i.e. the 4770k would be primarily for Enthusiast who want it all and for Liquid Nitrogen overclockers for record braking)

Though, the equally possible thing to happen is that the i7-4770K would be to the i7-4670k the same as the 2700k was to the 2600k. (since we didn't have an ivy 2700k version intel would make one on Haswell)

I think that the 4670k is an i5 with Hyper-Threading, one of the things people forget is that the 3770k has 2MB more L3 cache than the 3570k, I'd imagine that Intel probably has lower clock speeds and 2MB less cache on the 4670k to serve as a budget 8 thread chip.

Too many "ifs" and "buts" and an overly optimistic view, all while forgetting some key reasons why the BCLK can't be adjusted.

The PCIe controller is part of the Uncore, just so you know...Decoupling the uncore leaves the CPU alone on the BCLK if it includes USB and SATA, which were the main issue areas for bclk OCing.

That's what I heard too. To have fine-grain control of the base clock, EVERYTHING that bases its speed off of the base clock needs a full PLL generator (expensive, complex and not power efficient). Haswell will most likely have straps, which means non-K CPUs can overclock, but the overclocking ranges/options will be crude and limited.

I think Intel will have the GPU and CPU on separate ones, with the other one being a 100Mhz one for stuff that'd mostly run at fixed speeds anyway such as SATA, USB, Uncore, etc.

thats like saying an i3 2100 would tear the 2500 non k to shreds. i5 is still a quad core and i3 is a dual... no matter the clock speed.speed

The i3 would clock higher than the i5 on average, due to it being a simpler chip and having less transistors/points of failure...And considering most games can use 4 threads but barely notice the difference between 3-4, a 5Ghz i3 would be suitable for every gamer currently running an i5 3570k.

And I say on average for the OCing because while they may theoretically have the same max clock speed, the i3 would run into heat limitations much less quickly.

Maybe it's the IHS being soldered on again.

Let's hope it won't be $500.
i might jump onto haswell since it will be a really good overclocker
post #38 of 57
I don't foresee myself building a new PC until Haswell-E debuts (actually, probably after the Rampage 6 Extreme debuts alongside it). I don't see IVB-E being a worthwhile upgrade from a 3930K, definitely not a good cost:performance ratio there, although once prices drop ~1yr post-release, I may pick up the 3930K equivalent. I just want a nice, 8c/16t chip that can run 5-5.5Ghz on water biggrin.gif
