Yeah, why would anyone go to AMD if they could OC an i3?

I doubt it. However, there is no way to know for sure until release day, unless you're an employee at Intel working on Haswell.

I think an unlocked i3 will cannibalize i5 sales so I wouldn't hold my breath for it.

Most likely. People would either swing up to a i7 or down to a i3.

I disagree, the type of person who would buy a K edition i3 is typically the kind of person who went AMD because at those price points, AMD is currently in a pretty good position.

You know, the Intel engineer on that Reddit AMA said that they like having competition..Maybe that's the real reason we don't have an unlocked i3, because they want AMD to compete with. (ie. They try to beat AMDs OCed chips with their stock chips)

My favorite part of the article is when the author states that Haswell is the most anticipated CPU ever... I seem to remember quite a fuss being made before Bulldozer release (before we got our hands on it anyway) and that was only like a year ago. Also recall a bit of hand-wringing while awaiting my first Pentium 1 chip (upgrade from an 8088XT). Next we will start to be inundated with steamroller "leaks" and start building the hype. All generational CPU changes bring about massive anticipation and hopes for a golden chip, like my old Duron 800MHz which OC'd to 1.4GHz.

I doubt that it would, but we would have to see.

If you are playing games, a core i5 will still perform better. I'd still buy an i5, personally, unless a core i7 could be had second hand for a lower or the same price.

I hope Haswell will be great for OC-ing (as everybody else). I want to upgrade from my i7-860 ATi 5770 setup. With a nVidia 760, a good-clocking i7-4770K and watercooling (NZXT Kraken x60, I know I know, not REAL waterccooling....) I might see my next build right there. A performance bump of 15% pr. clock cycle in F@H would be great too, haha.

When it comes to unlocking an i3, I think it's a great idea. People who want a good OC chip, might move form AMD to Intel. People who buy i5s will also probably stay at i5s. since they perform so well in games.
