7870 or 660

Thread Starter
Trying to decide which one to pull the trigger on. According to Anandtech Bench, the two cards trade blows with one another. My budget is ~ $240.

Also, how can I tell which 7870 is Pitcairn and which one is Tahiti? From what I've read Tahiti is the better of the two? Not sure I need PhysX but it would be a nice thing to have down the road I suppose.

I've also read that the 7870 beats the 660Ti with the newest AMD drivers (cant remember the thread but that was a claim made on this forum here somewhere). If that is true, I'm going with a 7870 - can this be confirmed or denied?

I play mainly stuff like Hitman, Shogun, Far Cry 3, Crysis 2, Saints Row Third, Xcom: Enemy Unknown, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, the occasional Battlefield 3 and also use my PC as an HTPC hooked up to my 47".

EDIT: Also, which manufacturer and model should I get once I decide whether to go with a 7870 or 660.

they are very close to each other. The 660 does outperform the 7870 in several tests as the other way around. Temperatures and power usuage are similar as well. and they are just about on the same level as of how loud they are. Its really up to you. In this case i would go with the 660 as it is newer.

Final choice is up to you. Benches dont lie

Usually people have said AMD drivers are not great, Personaly i was an nvidia fanboy at one time and then switched to ati and had no issues. Looks like nvidia is on the down side of drivers as of lately. And yes i own an nvidia gpu atm.

Your link was for the 7870 vs the 660TI wink.gif Nice call though on the 660 being newer.

You can make a statement with no proof? I should try that out more often but it wont get you anywhere.

Your statement is false! Period. Because i have proof.

The 7870 Ghz edition is a little faster then the 660 but also tends to be more expensive. Another factor is that the 7870 has more OC head room when compared to the 660.

So while the 660 is by no means a bad card you do get a bit more out of an 7870 Ghz.

I would say get the 7870 Ghz windforce x3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125418

Proof enough? rolleyes.gif

If you meant the 660 Ti, sure the 660 Ti is marginally faster, but overclock that 7870 and it'll trade blows with a 7950 which is a much superior card to the 660 Ti.

Did I mention the 7870 is cheaper than a 660 Ti? rolleyes.gif

Personally I'd get a 7870 with a Tahiti LE GPU (the newer cards).

They're even better! thumb.gif

That's the one I initially planned on as it is the lowest priced 7870 I could find.

How can I tell which one has the Tahiti and which one is Pitcairn. I assume this one is Pitcairn and this one is Tahiti?

I posted a complete comparison including power usage and noise including most games out there and you come back with battlefield 3 maxed?

Oh, I thought he was between the 6870 and the 660TI not the 660. My bad plus rep:thumb:
