7870 or 660 - Page 2

7870 is able to crank out more raw frames than the 660, but the 660 is going to give overall smoother performance. smile.gif The 7870 is a stuttery little bugger right now. You'll see about a 10-15% advantage over the 660 in most benchmarks, but in terms of overall smoothness of gameplay, the 660 is definitely the victor.

Though a 660ti is a big jump up in performance....

Before it even comes to this, a certain AMD enthusiast is going to come into this thread. I'm going to go ahead and post what he would just to get it out of the way.

ehem...

OP the 7870 GHZ is going to be much faster than the 660 at stock. And when you OC it to 1.2ghz it trades blows with a 7950 which is 3-5% slower than a 7970 which is teh pwnz card

I would get the Sapphire 7950 boost edition even though it's nowhere even close to being relevant to this conversation.

Oh, I thought he was between the 6870 and the 660TI not the 660. My bad plus rep:thumb:

Because Battlefield 3 is a pretty demanding game that pushes a lot of cards, would you have liked Half Life 1 benchmarks better? rolleyes.gif

To be sure - this is the 7870 vs the 660 as outlined in the anandtech bench link in my first post.

Yeah, but it's also an extra $60 - and If I was to spend the extra money then I'd be faced with a similar decision to make, the 660TI vs the 7950.

biggrin.gif

that's the 6870 vs 660.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/660?vs=548 = 7870 trades blows with the 660

That said, the majority votes for the 7870 with one vote for the 660. I still have few days (4) before I make a final decision though.

OP a HD 7870 is faster than GTX 660 and slower than GTX 660 Ti. the HD 7870 Tahiti LE competes with GTX 660 Ti. at 1200 mhz the HD 7870 tahiti LE matches HD 7970 (925 Mhz)

the sapphire HD 7870 XT is not in stock right now. but you could grab that when its available.

www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11199-20-20G/dp/B00AWKYB1M/

the PCS+ MYST HD 7870 tahiti LE cooler is not as good as the sapphire card which comes with the excellent dual x cooler. the PCS+ card gets loud with overclocking

if you can stretch your budget the HD 7950 for 290 bucks after rebate is a very good card . comes with 3 free games.

Methinks that Sapphire XT there looks like my future graphics card to me.

The cooler or noise thereof is not really a concern as I have a Arctic Cooling S1 Plus that I am planning to use, so the PCS+ is an option. On the other hand, since I already have all those games which come with the 7950, I could get it and by selling the games get back into my original budget sneaky.gif

Is there any real way to tell a Pitcairn fro a Tahiti?
