This. If you really don't like Metro UI, get Start8 (there are other free programs too).

Windows 8 performs a bit better, if not drastically in some cases due to the more polished foundation. If you don't want to spend the extra $5 to get Start8 (or just even download some program that returns the start menu), then start learning to use keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts IMO are the most efficient and quickest way to get around. You could also get an application launcher such as Launchy, assuming it can also start any Metro UI programs you want to use.

I'm considering the $40 upgrade download. But a few questions first.
If I download it now, but decide not to make the switch for a a few months is that going to be possible or did microsoft build in some expiration feature for the upgrade.
Are the Start8, and Classic Shell programs third party or are they from Mircrosoft, and how do they perform.

Also I would like to know this:

I wasn't sure if i'd like windows 8 but took the jump anyways. It's really a no brainer. Windows 8 will be supported longer, newer tech, a bit quicker than 7. Once you get start8 it feels like an overall snappier version of windows 7 and if you like the metro UI, if that's what it's still called" you can still use it. So +1 for windows 8, I made the switch and I'm happy I did, plus it was only $15 so why not lol.
I guess no one really mentioned it but on ninite, quick google search, and scroll down to download classic start and it's free, that's what I use. Seems to work the same as start8 so best of luck.

I have windows 8 on a removable ssd in my front rack. I am using Vista 64 ultmate for all programs from my older machine so i did not have to renew licenses. Windows 8 takes some getting use to. there is no dreamscene or support for pop mail servers. So there are differences. It will try to be the conduit for all your email accounts and have you sign up to microsft so they can sell you apps. Without an internet connection i think 50% of windows 8 would not fucntion. I will use it more when Dx11.1 games use it i think. but there is a smashing cocktail app you can get for free. Don't know if that was worth an OS upgrade though.
