[Kotaku] The Lead Writer Of Dragon Age Largely Avoids BioWare’s ‘Increasingly Toxic’ Forums

It can't be easy to be a BioWare writer. You and your co-workers run yourselves ragged crafting huge, sprawling stories, and afterwards you're subjected to all manner of intense feedback, much of it shouted by the more extreme corners of your fanbase.

So it's perhaps not a huge surprise that these days, Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider tends to avoid the BioWare Social Network (BSN), his own company's forums, which he describes as "increasingly toxic."...

More at source. It was posted on Wednesday and I just saw it today.

Oh come on Dave. Take a deep breath of those fumes, they're good for ya; barely any asbestos at all.

Most (dare I saw all?) forums are growing increasingly toxic. You've got this community of users that does most, possibly all of their socializing anonymously online and they forget how to have a respectful conversation with someone. It's hard to find a thread on this website even that doesn't have at least a few vitriolic posts!

I find it interesting that so many people complained about Dragon age 2. But I had a blast - sure it did not have as long of a story line as first one. But it let me finish it in reasonable amount of time and I actually finished it 3 times ! My only game so far with 3 play through.

I loved the story for DA1 and 2 it was DA 2's gameplay that sucked for me. The fact that they reused the same maps over and over.

On topic I can see why he would avoid the forums. Yet I cant help but be on the side of the users. ME3 ending was so bad and infuriated so many people. Bioware as a whole is on my wait to buy list when they were on my pre-order list before. After DA 2's gameplay, ME3's ending, SWToR's colossal flop, not to mention the origin only exclusives. All my bioware games are on steam and i refuse to use origin or split my collection.

TL;DR What has EA done to Bioware!

Dragon age II was just so much different from the first one. The combat, the art style, i just didn't get into the story as much as i did DA: O. All of the repeat dungeons got annoying after a while because I felt like I was just playing the same level over and over again. DA II was still entertaining, but I think everyone was just expecting it to be more like the original, which was nearly perfect in my book.

Why is kotaku allowed to be used as a news source? Its equivalent to posting news from the nation enquirer.

Toxic atmosphere from the fan base have always existed. It is simply that the Internet has evolved into a much more immediate type of anonymous social media where communication is instantaneous and very public and can catch on as wildfire very quickly. In the past, fans were limited to angry calls, faxes, and mail. That was easier to deal with and contain and required a lot more effort on the fan's end so the anger and backlash of fans in a game gone wrong was not as collective or immediately focused. What the internet age has done is to gather up fans of all different views and perspectives and dumped them into the same bucket, which is why the situation is often a winless one when developers attempt to communicate on the forums. You have different fans responding and with each change, if it is not what the fans were expecting, you end up with a lot of anger from various sides all targeted at the devs, who will then typically retreat into PR speak or just stop communicating with the community which unfortunately, only serves to further add fuel to the fire. In all honesty, the only real way to deal with this sort of snowballing situation is really to force people to register their real identities and things typically become much quieter and civil. Unfortunately, this also opens the door for identity theft as well.

Seems like he should learn the differentiate between criticism of his work and critisism of his character. Can't say i feel sorry for the guy. People voice their opinion and if you can take the heat, do something else. That goes for being constantly criticized to, If people are generally dismissive of your work, you probably should do something else. Can't say I feel sorry for the guy, I don't but I would gladly scold him for not reading what's posted. Taking critique isn't just about being pummeled, it's about learning stuff and if you can't handle information that's counterpositioned to what you already know/believe well the answer is simple. Do something else.
Seems like more and more gamedevelopers demands to be treated like artists, not even artists deserve to be threated like artists. Supply and demand, if someone takes the time to tell you something about your work you should thank them. (most companies pay people to find out what people think of them.)

I revise my earlier statement that I don't feel sorry for him. I think he's ungrateful.

edit:
(maybe it wouldn't be so toxic if the company you work for hadn't let out a great big fart at the end of the last game, just saying.)
