[PROJECT] The Woody Chronicles

Sorry in advance for all the poor quality cell phone photos wink.gif
Completed Case Spoiler!!! (Click to show)

Well this is my first attempt at creating a custom case for myself. I am naming it "Woody" because it makes sense for the material used, and it appeals to the teenage boy inside of me tongue.gif I am planning on building it out of wood fiber boards for the sake of cost and descent durability (and the fact that I think it will look sweet painted black biggrin.gif). Fan grills will be ordered online but I am not sure from where as I haven't picked out which one's I want.

Anyway, I created a rough 3d model of what I am going to do with Sketchup. If you want to take a look (I would love comments/suggestions) the file is attached. (I had to upload it externally because it would not stop giving me errors) Here is the DL link. You can download Sketchup here.

My idea was to create a case that could easily accommodate my Kuhler 620 (CPU) and the H80 I am about to get for my GPU. I also wanted to create something that was attractive and somewhat compact. The idea of hiding all components other than the mobo/gpu/coolers was also very appealing to me. As far as the sketch goes, PSU, HDD/SSD, and optical drive will go in the very bottom. The mobo goes in the middle section, and the radiators have their own airflow chamber on top.

If anyone is interested in downloading and taking a look I would love to hear what you think. I will be buying parts within the next week to get work underway, pics to follow of course smile.gif

I did forget to add that the back and left side will be removable and the middle shelf and top shelf will slide out so that everything can be accessed easily.

Pretty sweet idea, but I'm baffled that you would build with wood and then cover it up with paint. Being a carpenter by trade this makes me sad. Personally I would just invest in some pine, because it is durable (unlike fiber board lolz) and when you are using screws they would he much more likely to hold. Or if you were going all out save up for some cherry or any other hard wood (probably best for noise dampening) and would look very nice.
Good luck

Good luck

As for covering it with paint, I think black looks much sleeker and more modern that wood does. I've never really been a fan of wood furniture that's just stained. As far as durability, it's not like the case will be taking a beating or anything, so I'm not too worried about it (especially considering all of the furniture that is made with fiber board that stands up to quite a bit of abuse). I don't plan to use a lot of screws, mostly pegs and glue, with a couple screws to hold each panel in place. The screws I do use will be installed with pilot holes to prevent splitting.

Here is a couple more pics.

This is what I am thinking for the power/reset/indicator LEDs/fan controller.

This pic is showing the location of some custom built LED strips I am planning on making. They will be able to light up white, blue, both, or neither with a dimmer to set the brightness.

Well anliveyak went shopping with me for the parts, and he convinced me to use pine teaching.gif. So here's a couple pics of some of the materials and some new tools I got. Work should begin tomorrow! thumb.gif

UPDATE: I decided to redesign the case a bit to make it more practical for installation of parts as well as future water cooling endeavors. Here's what I am doing now. I have all of the wood cut and will be assembling and painting tomorrow. After that It's just finish work and instrument panel. I'll post pics tomorrow before and after construction and paint.
