8800s on amd?

Thread Starter
well i've owned the 939 rig for 3 months now, and i am on 3700+

i was wondering if any amd cpus could handle the new dx-10 cards?

i really don't want to build a new pc for c2d, and my friend said about amd making new cpus for it.

"The 8800GTX is a bad ass card, and the core 2 duo is a bottleneck, got to get a quad core to unleashed it.

Now AMD is coming out with the FX-70 and FX-72 which is quad core. and x2 5000+'s. So anyone upgrading hold on cause AMD has finally released there 65nm process cpu's"

so what do you guys think? is there any hope for 939 or have to switch over to am2? i know there are a lot of amd owners here so.

Nobody (but me) knows what they're talking about. Every CPU on the planet will bottleneck that card. If you're running a game that isn't heavily threaded then even the mighty Core 2 Quad will bottleneck it. The C2D is a great CPU, but if the app doesn't take advantage of the multiple cores then it'll keep the 8800 from reaching it's maximum performance levels....

Edit: It's important to mention that although the 8800 won't be able to reach it's potential you won't be at all hurting in the eye candy or frame rates this GPU will kick out.

You have a very solid single core processor right there, and if there's a single core out there that will have as minimal impact on the 8800's performance yours is it. That said, the 939 platform is being phased out, if you really wish to stick with AMD update to a AM2 or Quad FX motherboard (month or two).

From all the reviews i've read, C2D will NOT be a bottleneck for a SINGLE G80 card. You will need Quad core if you want to run 2 G80 in SLI.

IMO you should upgrade to Conroe, amd could be a bottleneck for this card.

P.S these 8800 cards are VERY dependent on CPU.

what's the quad fx?

and what is the point of having 8800gtx if they bottleneck? unless they plan to give a better cpu?

Quad FX will be the platform the FX-70, 72, 74 and eventually the FX-76(true quad core) will be released on.

Ok, doubling the amount of cores doesn't mean it will run twice as fast. A C2D at about 3.0ghz or higher won't bottleneck a 8800GTX. An A64 at 2.5ghz or less will bottleneck a X1900XT. If you want to play DX10 games at settings good enough to justify buying DX10 hardware, you'll need a 8800 series or R600. Wait till the first DX10 games come out though. You still have about 3 months, and another 12(at least) months till DX10 is mainstream.
