310.90 Drivers keep "Breaking"?

Thread Starter
Hi,

Ever since I installed the latest 310.90 drivers I've had this strange issue where my drivers keep breaking on my next reboot.
Half of the time I can reboot just fine, but then the other half of the times I reboot the drivers just break.
(Meaning I'm watching a 800x600 screen and Nvidia control panel is telling me there are no Nvidia cards in use)
After reinstalling the drivers everything works fine again.
Weird thing is that during the installation of the drivers it still detects that the current drivers are present.

I've been using this rig since the GTX680s first came out and have never seen anything like this. (before the 680s I always used AMD so don't have that much green XP under my belt)
Anyone know what causes this?

Looks like its a SLI issue and you have a old driver hidden in there somewhere, I had this problem before.. It doesn't help that nvidia drivers are a bit temperamental in SLI, anyways here goes..

This is what I had to do to fix it.

1) Remove everything NVIDIA, start by removing the Graphics driver in the programs and feature, reboot..
1a) upon reboot, your system will detect one as standard vga and the other as unknown, it will prompt to reboot again.
2) You should now have only the HD driver and PhysX driver left in the programs and feature, remove the HD driver first, then remove the PhysX, this way you'd only have to reboot once since nvida will complain about your system not rebooted yet if you remove the PhysX first.
3) download the latest version of driver sweeper from Phyxion.net now driver fusion by Treexy.
4) reboot in safe mode, run driver sweeper, select everything nvidia and scan, select remove...
5) reboot and install the latest driver from nvidia, reboot when prompted..

other notes:
I find that the by enabling first the off screens if you are running dual or surround first in the Windows Screen resolution page, SLI tends to behave better afterwards, if you don't have dual or surround just jump to next step.

Enable SLI and everything should work, note that by me saying nvidia drivers are a bit temperamental in SLI, I have notice that if I switch back and forth from SLI to Activate All Displays, or even disable SLI entirely a lot, NVIDIA driver will crash or do something funny, this is a error I can repeat, since I run in surround I just leave it on "span display" and not touch it, runs fine after that..

Hope this helps... Cheers

310.90 is broken roll back to to .70. the drivers fail to initialize after a cold. there is a thread over at nvidia where it has been reported and the nvidia engeneer has been gathering system information from people.

Nothing unusual there, just nVidia continuing the downward trend that's been going on for months now. Their current drivers are crap, roll back to an older set.

I had just got a 2nd 680 and I was having this problem. And wondering if the new card was the problem. Glad I am not the only one and hope Nvidia releases new driver soon!

Don't really want to roll back to a previous driver because the current drivers are the only ones that allow me to play Far Cry without bluescreening rolleyes.gif
But I'll give mr anderson's advice a shot ;-)

Nice drivers for me, FC3 is perfectly stable no crashes at all since last few drivers.

p.s. forget to mention, this driver is not as OC friendly as last one (310.70), it seems to have a slightly lower OC threshold. So for those who have stability issues and OC'ing their cards, try lowering your OC a bit.

im pretty sure its SLI related so this would explain it, most people on the nvidia forums that report it are running GTX690's as they are always in SLI mode by default

I even tried removing 1 of my graphics cards from the motherboard and same problem.
if you read the nvidia forums about this driver you will see it's any kind of setup that has issues.
