Taking windows 7 from my current laptop and replace it with linux and then taking the windows 7 on my laptop to my new computer rig

So I'm about to finish building my brand new rig and I was wondering if i have a laptop that i bought with windows 7 on it can I take windows 7 off my laptop and put it on my new rig so I can put linux on my laptop? and if it's possible how if I never got a code or anything since the laptop just came with it..??

Not legally if its OEM which it probably is

Thanks didn't even know there were oem versions but now I looked into it I'm a little bummer out because I was hoping I could then just upgrade to windows 8 for 40 dollars but I can't afford a full copy ATM in my budget. So I found out as a college student I can get windows server 2012 free and I think I'm going to use that unless someone in the new thread I just posted says its not a good idea for running my games and stuff

Windows 8 is retailing for 60 bucks.!! Saw it at Staples
