Installing windows 8 questions

Thread Starter
hi guys,

i bought windows 8 the other day and i just haven`t been able to get myself to install it yet, i am worried about compatibility problems with my hardware and my games coz my pc is a gaming pc.

my first question is i will be installing windows 8 on my ssd and i am hoping to not have to do a fresh install if windows 8. will i need to unlug the other hard drives while windows 8 is installing?
also i have steam and all my steam and other games on my second hard drive, will they all still work or will i have to delete them and install them all again ?

im also worried that my asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0 motherboard drivers and stuff will not work, it does say on the web site its compatible but does that mean all the asmedia and sata drivers are as well ?

i have run the compatibility assisstant thing and they only things it comes up with are dirt 3 but it says there is a update for it, fraps but it says there is a paid update for it and i will need video software but i use vlc player anyway.

any help please is it easy ?

also can i leave my anti virus avira premium running and will i need to install that again ?

what about my 7970 graphic card drivers do i need to uninstall them and reinstall them ?

Firstly I recommend doing a clean format. If you still wish to upgrade your installation that's your call.

Nope.

Nope again. If your upgrading then you shouldn't have to worry about this, but if steam isn't installed on your computer anymore after the upgrade do this: (leave the Steam installation folder where it is currently located), download and install the Steam client, during installation keep the new install location as the location of your old steam folder. Steam should be setup just as it was earlier, right down to having your username and password saved.

Most manufacturers have Windows 8 drivers out. And if it says its compatible then yes they should have windows 8 drivers for all your components.

Yes, it's probably one of the easiest OS installs ever.

You might, but most probably not, you can keep it running.

Yes you will need to download new windows 8 drivers from AMD.

I have steam and all my steam games installed on the second hard drive. Will it still work ok?

Also if I do a clean install of windows 8 will all my games and steam still work from my second hard drive or will it all have to be install again ? Coz if they will all work then I might as well do a fresh install
post #4 of 22
Yes it will. As long as your steam folder is intact it will work. And yes even if you do a clean install you can recover steam using the same procedure. You won't have to download anything, except for the Steam client. Just make sure your steam folder isn't in the drive/partition you're formatting tongue.gif

sohow do i uninstall steam without uninstalling all my games from the steam app folder, coz steam is installed on the second hard drive not the ssd which windows is on
post #6 of 22
Damn dude, you can just launch steam from the folder it's on.

W8 should load a generic driver for the vast majority of your hardware.

can i install windows 8 the same way as installing windows 7 by putting the disc in the drive rebooting then format my ssd from the windows installation screen and then installing it?

or do i have to put windows 8 in the drive while windows 7 is running and use the activation key first. i always thought you had to activate windows 8 over the windows 7 first?

also is formatting an ssd just the same as formatting a normal hard drive?

sorry for questions its just i don`t want to get it wrong

Don't worry about uninstalling steam. Just reinstall steam with your old Steam folder's location as your new install's location, and steam will take over from there.

Are you going to buy the $15 upgrade online or buy an upgrade DVD, if you're doing the upgrade online then may not be able to do a clean install, you'll have to do an upgrade. But then again I haven't done it this way so I don't know you'll have to wait for someone with more info in the area.
