core i7 2700k overclock potential?

Hello guys im fairly new hear and havent really posted much. I just recently bought a core i7 2700k to replace my i5 2500k for holding back my gtx 680's in bf3 pretty badly. I was wondering how lucky i would be to hit 5ghz with reasonable voltage. I know the 2700k;s are higher binned cpu's thats why i bought it. Also i will be using an h100 with antec nano diamond 6 thermal paste (the only tube i have around here)..
will that thermal paste suffice for the h100? All help is much appreciated smile.gif

i have hit 5.3 @ 1.45 stable but i run 5.1 @ 1.42 24/7 stable. it's basically luck though but you should be able to hit 5 pretty easily. and yeah just make sure your temps are under 80 under load. what motherboard and ram do you have?

My motherboard is an Asus.p8z77mpro which is a great motherboard in my.opinion and.I have.16gb of DDR3 ripjaw x ram at 1600mhz. Also if u have any.advice on hitting 5ghz I would love to know!

oh cool basically the same mobo that i have. first turn off intel speed step. next set the base clock or bclk to 100 and then just adjust the multiplier. set your voltage to manual and set it to 1.4v and set the multiplier to 48. try booting and if it boots stress test it with something like prime95 or ibt. if it works and is stable, go back into the bios and raise the multiplier to 49. repeat the stress test. if that goes well go back and raise it again. if it doesn't work try bumping up the voltage but dont go past 1.43v. it's basically just trial and error though so it takes some time...be patient and good luck thumb.gif

Nice motherboard haha smile.gif! and thanks for the advice will do.. From what i see most people hit 5 ghz anyways on the 2700k's... My plan is to first get 4.8ghz stable like u said with the lowest vcore possible.. then i willl slowly increase the vcore and multiplier until i hit 5ghz!
ill keep you informed!

Was your 2500k overclocked and to what frequency? I am not sure what sort of performance benefit you will see with a 2700k if you are coming from a 2500k, but my guess would be minimal. If I was you, and i HAD to upgrade, I would have gone with the 3770k to get a slightly better ipc and pcie 3.

yes my 2500k was at 4.8ghz but the reason i am upgrading is because it did not provide enough power in the main game i play which is bf3.. it is heavily cpu dependent in large multiplayer matches and brought the cpu to its knee's. Ive even seen the fps drop to the 40's and thats with 2 gtx 680's at 1200mhz!!! So from intensive research i found that hyperthreading or more cores makes a large difference in bf3 multiplayer wise and should help keep my gpu usage higher.. Btw i didnt go ivy because of the temps and there was nothing really new that intrigued me.

hey just an update... ive had the cpu installed for a few days.. managed to get 5ghz stable but with more vcore than liking.. its turns out i hit a wall at anything past 4.8 ghz that just needs so much more vcore. i settled for 4.8ghz with a low 1.38vcore!!! i could get it lower but dont have enought time to fool with it now.. temps are amazing with h100. idles around 19c and load on prime is in the 60's...

that's really good nice job...just out of curiosity what voltage did you need to hit 5?

Same. I run my 2700K at 4.7 to 4.8 24/7/30+ days doing Folding@Home. I can get it to run for a couple hours at a time at 5GHz, but I need REAL stability, just not a couple hours of time for gaming.
