[No Bug] 'hide' option auto selected for spam reports

post #1 of 41
Thread Starter
  • What happened?
    When reporting a post, the 'Hide and hold for moderator review' option is auto-ticked when 'spam' is selected.
    When other drop downs are selected (even after spam was initially picked), the option unticks. But when 'spam' is reselected, the option ticks itself again.
  • Are you able to reproduce this problem consistently?
    Yes, on Chrome, Firefox and Opera on Windows 7 and ArchLinux. Happens every time, regardless of browser, OS or thread.

  • What action did you expect to occur when this bug appeared?
    I have been informed by a mod (Bitemarks and bloodstains) that the option should be unticked.

  • Browser, active browser addons, and operating system:
    Win7: Chrome - no addons
    Win7: Firefox - no enabled addons
    Win7: Opera - no addons
    Linux: Chromium - no related addons enabled
    Linux: Firefox - no addons
    Linux: Opera - no addons
  • URL where the issue occurs:
    Any post in any thread.

I very quick scan through Chrome's inspect function has thrown up the following code:
Code:
$H.module.add("flagging", function(a) {
    a.Global.on("H:Dialog:Open:flag_add_type", function(b) {
        a.one('#flag_add_type select[name="Flag[reason]"]').on("change", function(d) {
            var c = d.target.ancestor("form").one('input[name="mark_as_held"][type="checkbox"]');
            c && c.set("checked", ("spam" == d.target.get("value")))
        })
    });

But it is better for the Hide option to be automatically enabled so that you don't have to click it.  When reporting something as spam, we are supposed to enable the Hide option too.  So, why not have it enabled by default when selecting Spam?

Personally, I love the fact that I no longer have to bother clicking the Hide option when I'm reporting something as spam.  I feel that this is the way it should be.

There's good arguments both for and against such a default, but to be honest, I don't really care. This whole bug report came about because I used "spam" to report duplicate posts and left the "hide" option enabled (purely because I'm an idiot of the English language so couldn't figure out it's purpose, so kept the defaults). Thus I was told to submit a bug report.

If the intended and preferred behaviour is the current set up, then so be it smile.gif

I am hoping that it is the intended behavior.  I love it.

It never used to be the default, and I feel it causes more issues being defaulted than it would otherwise. As if you don't untick it then you get the wrath of the mods for using it improperly.

Then comes the second problem I have with it, what is the intended purpose? I've been warned twice about using in times when it was clear as day spam or inappropriate material and am still told that it isn't used for such. So it definitely needs a more descriptive description or rules for it need to be more lenient with the way it's described now. What kind of spam is appropriate kind to use the hold feature? Just saying spam could mean a few different things, but if only spam bots are the appropriate usage, then that needs to be made clear to only hold spam bots and not just general user spam, etc.

I know I'm not alone and it has been ranted about before by other users as well, but it still seems to be an issue.

That's exactly what happened with me and the lack of description was the very point I raised. What's worse is I then received PMs from two different moderators warning me about incorrect usage (I appreciate they probably didn't mean to come across negatively, but when you have two separate PMs from two separate moderators each bluntly expressing that my report was incorrect - then it can't not come across badly).

And to be honest, if the moderators are spending this much effort policing the usage, which in turn appears ungrateful and puts us users off reporting posts, then it's clearly a very bad feature to have.

Quite frankly, after chatting to one or two people via PM, I'm convinced this feature is better off removed entirely and left to the moderators to manage (while still having a basic report function). If it's a question of having active moderators to manage the work, then recruit more moderators. But the method is really discouraging as it sounds like so many helpful people just get stung by it.

I hope that makes sense, I'm half asleep at the moment laugher.gif

It is for spam as posted by spam bots and by people who are hired to post spam.  It is not for anything else.

Before Overclock.net switched to Huddler, we had something known as The Spam Squad.  You were a part of the Spam Squad if you had been here for 2 years and had 250 Rep points (or something like that).  The members of The Spam Squad had the ability to report a post as spam.  So now with OCN's version of Huddler, they have this Spam option and we get to "Hide" the post too because this is exactly what reporting a post as spam did back before Huddler.

So, it's not for user spam (what I would actually call "flooding").  It's not for duplicate posts or threads.  It's not for inappropriate posts.  It's not for anything but spam as posted either by spambots or people hired to go around the internet posting spam.

I've used it hundreds of times already for that and I've never been talked to about it.  When I want to report anything other than spam, then I do not select "Spam" because it's not spam.  Spam is nothing more than unsolicited advertising.  Today, the word "spam" is being misused way too much and its meaning is being completely forgotten.

I have noticed I don't have the "Mark as held" or "hide" option when I report a post.
Is it possible it has been revoked because I used it improperly?

I believe you need 150 or 200 rep before it becomes visible.

I SWEAR I had the option before, unless they changed it sometime after the launch of Huddler.
