help me build around my 478 P4

Thread Starter
I was going to build my son a PC with a PC that my work gave me. But ( yes you can beat me for this) I purchased a e-machine on black friday for his Xmas gift. He's 11 and I couldn't pass the deal for what he would be using it for.
Any way, I have this P4 to play with and I'm buying a Monitor for myself so my old one will join the P4. Now I need a great board, Ram and maybe a case/PSU combo. Because it is a play toy, Maybe a board that will help me O/C the sucker. Any help will do because I know nothing of Intel.

the 865 and 875 chipsets are going to be the best you can get for that socket. the most popular ones are the ASUS P4P800 for the 865 and an ABIT board for the 875. The ASUS boards have been used a lot and are great overclockers but the suffer from voltage droop under load. With mine it idles at 1.5vcore but loads down to 1.42 vcore which can lead to instability. I wanted to try the ABIT board but I upgraded my rig instead. Unfortunately I cant seem to find these boards for sale anymore except on ebay.

With my P4 I had a P4P800-E Deluxe.Alot of great options with that board.I had it for 2 years without one problem.I should have kept that and am still kicking myself inthe rear for getting rid of it.
It was also my first Intel since I had so many problems with AMD boards.I lost count on how many AMD board and CPUS I bought up until I bought my P4.And everyone thought I was crazy for buying Intel back then. Now all teh naysayers I have for friends are using Intel.
I also had Mushkin ram I got from newegg.Value set and it ran good with that was about 80-90$ for the ram.1GB (2x512)
Here is some Mushkin ram here for not a bad price, not what I had though

The overclocking masters for the socket 478 in my opinion are as follows.

1# Abit IC7
2#Asus P4P800 Deluxe
3#MSI Neo 2 865PE (with the blue pcb)

In fact virtually any of the P4P800 series of Asus motherboards should bring you to a nice overclock. Those boards were wonderful value back in the day. Got my P4P800 SE for like 250NZD which is very good.

A little off topic but make your son OC it! It'd be a great male bonding experience and he would learn more of the intracies of a computer.
