Goal is to get 5ghz

Will the 990 give me a better overclock on a FX-6300 generally? I have no interest in crossfire so the 4x slot on the 970 doesn't concern me.

Both 8+2 phase boards.

This will be a microcenter purchase with a FX-6300.

Main usage is gaming. Want to give the FX series ago.

Thanks,
Bob

Any help would be great. I hope to buy this stuff at Microcenter when I'm there tomorrow.

Well, for whats it worth, I have a 990FXA-UD3 and it's a solid board for the price. I can't talk of the 970a because I haven't used it myself, but looking at the specs the only major difference seems to be difference in HT link freq and the lack of eSata port on the 970a. But if you want to give the FX series a proper go you should be looking at the 8350, the 6300 isn't that much different to a Phenom II x6 AFAIK.
