Quick KVM Switch question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, got a simple KVM switch question but I can't seem to find the answer on google. Right now I have two computers that are close to each other and they are each connected to a mouse, keyboard, and dual monitors. Now I don't mind switching the monitor inputs but I just want to have one keyboard and one mouse for two computers. If I just don't plug in the video to to the switch will I be able to switch just the keyboard and mouse? One other quick question, I heard there was a lag time between switches up to 3 seconds. Would this be a factor in the quality of the switch or because it is switching video also?

Thanks again guys,

Coss

First, there are two types of KVM.... hardware only and ones with software.

If you get a hardware only one, it doesn't matter. All the computers will know is that there is or is not a KB/M plugged in. The switch time is nearly instant since it is just redirecting signals. However, the computer may take a moment to register the new device and load drivers.
Once again...

Microsoft --mouse without borders. I'll get the link for you now. I use it with my test pc and it works beautiful. Also a hardware kvm for another station at my desk that swaps between about another 5 different PCs setup. I try to avoid using it to the point of remote desktop to PC's that are <5 feet away tongue.gif

Will it always take a second to "install/load" the new mouse/KB drivers or after the first time it will be just like unplugging and plugging it back in? I guess there is never going to be a solution to stop the lag time between switching though.

shouldnt' take more than 4 seconds to load......much faster than playing around with cables

Unplug your mouse... plug it back it in. That's how long it takes.

Do you actually need a KVM? If one machine is something like a server, why not just RDP into it?

Nice, this is better than just RDP.
