Built New Computer, Transferred Old HDD's (all non-OS drives), NO FILES!!

Thread Starter
Hey all-

My SSD got a trojan virus and motherboard was getting the glitchy "cold booting" problem that effectively killed it, so I replaced the SSD and MoBo and rebuilt the computer. I had two HDD's with TONS of data on them but after I just set up the "new" computer and reattached the old HDD's, Windows Explorer recognizes that there are files on the HDD's (ie. in Computer, it shows "124 GB free of 931 GB") but when I click the drive the only files displayed are 2 folders, named "avast! sandbox" and "Boot". I have avast! installed on my comp now and had MSE on it when it crashed.

4 years worth of documents, all of my game saves, and thousands of songs/movies/other valuables are stuck on these two drives and I have no idea of how to get my computer to recognize them. Please help!

I read somewhere that the old files can only be read when attached to the old mobo -- is this true? And if so, is there anyway to buy a new HDD and push the files onto the new one?

So you just left the data drives as is? You didn't back them up or anything? I'm not trying to sound like I'm scolding you for not backing up, I'm just trying to understand the situation.

So it says it has the space used up but you only see 2 folders? How big are the folders? Do you have it so you can see invisible files from folder options?

could be the drives hiding files because of the ownership thing. try chaning the view hidden folders setting. and then take ownership of the files you need.

Did NOT back these HDD's up since as soon as the SSD got the trojan, it literally killed the computer. When I would turn it on, nothing was recognized and I can't even begin to describe what the screen looked like. I figured it best to not mess around but rather turn everything off immediately and harvest the uneffected drives.

The two folders are only a few MB in size.

How do you see invisible files?

SIDENOTE: I am currently scanning the big HDD (the one mentioned in the original post) since it is the one with the documents/game save files/music with avast! and the scan DOES recognize all of the files. The pathways listed in the avast! scan are the same as they used to be. Which brings me back around to how do I see invisible files?

EDIT: got hidden folders to show, but is there a way to mass-reclaim all my old folders/files in one go? I am not great with OS operations and would really prefer to not screw this up. I really appreciate everyones help.

So, you do see the files as hidden? I think all you should have to do is right click on them and uncheck the "hidden" option.

Just reclaim the documents and stuff.

Right click the folder > properties>security>advanced>Click owner tab>edit>click your profile name>check replace owner> click okay.
