Edit: GPU seems cool at no more than 56c from what I've seen, so I'm guessing a closed loop would solve my thermal issues.

That's normal, most reviews on 550D shows a significantly lower GPU temp mainly because they get the majority of the front fan intake:

You should be able to get better thermal with a h80i/h100i.

I'm very happy with my Noctua NH-D14. I changed from a Hyper 212+ to a normal Silver Arrow to the D14 and noticed some nice drops in temps. I run my 3770k at 4.6ghz @ 1.29v and when doing heavy cpu load work like HD video encoding for long periods, the temps sit around 75c max. My room ambient temps sit about 26-27c so I'm sure if you have lower room temps you could get that cpu number closer to 70c.

If you are de-lidded than the H80i would be fine if you want it. I like the D14 personally because it is quiet. Keeps my 3570k at 55 degrees when gaming at 4.9ghz.

Due to noise and cost I'm steering towards the D14. Considering the extra fans and size it has to decrease my temps by 10c, if it doesn't, I can always upgrade the case fans later.

Thoughts?

didnt notice that big temdrop with HT on or off tho,
maybe its just me smile.gif

HT off

HT on

2-3C temp difference

D-14 is one of the best aircoolers out there, the phanteks ph-tc14pe is about the same,.
if i had the money back then, i would have got me the D-14, phanteks wasnt on the market yet

but i bought the Mugen2 rev B, it was cheaper, 35 euro,the D-14, 65 euro..
but it wasnt enough anyways, i ran 4.5ghz, start prime , and hit 105C within seconds,
have to be a bit lucky in the lottery tempwise also, so i delidded, now my mugen does the job very well, as you can see above biggrin.gif

Edit: so I'm guessing a closed loop would solve my thermal issues.

a closed loop will give you a bit better results, im sure,
but it wont solve your thermal isues all together, sure peeps here say,
with my cooler it runs xC at x.Mhz, or anything like that, change/buy more casefans
but as i mentioned above, ivy is a hothead, it is what it is most of the time,

so others have better temps that way, because of a better seated IHS to the die,
mine ran 105C running prime at 4.5ghz, i dont think changing to a closed waterloop or a better aircooler,
adding more casefans would have helped me much..left alone solved my thermal issues

you have to live with it,
or you could spend more money on better cooling, more casefans, try that way,
or start thinking about delidding it smile.gif

Not sure if to change the front fans instead - really don't have more money to "blow".

It doesn't sound like you have enough airflow coming in the front for your cooler. It's a well known fact that Ivy runs hotter, the 212 Evo should be doing a better job than what you're seeing. It's a shame the way they made those Ivy chips instead of soldering the heat shield they used this compound that gives so many people a wide range of temps. I don't recommend delidding the Ivy but a lot of people are doing it in order to achieve better temps. I have a front CM megaflow 200mm that moves 110 CFM and don't even hear it.

The 550D can have a 200mm on the side panel, the CM megaflow reads silent and if it is I may do that.

With that case just about any fan you put in it isn't going to make a ton of noise even at full 12v. They make a non LED version of the CM megaflow 200mm fan too. I don't know if a side panel fan would make a difference in your CPU cooler. That case could easily fit a H80i or H100i if you end up going that route.

At the top I know, thinking of H100i but I'd need to remove the top cover and apparently trhey are noisy.
