has anyone switched from a 670 to a 7970? differences? better, worse?? - Page 6

Maybe I didn't switch to a 7970. but a 7950...
All I can say I am impressed by this change, in most demanding and new games the 7950 is faster.
It also eats less performance hit than a GTX 670 especially when 8x AA is enabled.
Even though my GTX 670 was an awesome overclocker and this 7950 is a little bit of a dud, I still prefer it over the 670 thumb.gif .
The only game I currently suffer from is Skyrim, I get annoying artifacts from time to time but I hope driver 13.2 fix this...
The GTX 670 win only in Nvidia optimized games and in synthetics.

The card they used had an actual boost to 1016 mhz instead of the 980 mhz.

My 670 FTW did the same thing. 1084 mhz is all they will guarantee boost to be but mine did 1215 mhz right out of the box.

OC vs OC, my 7970 ghz is probably 10% better than my 670 ftw was. That number, of course, will be higher in some games and lower in others.

I thought this vid was pretty funny, well the comments on the vid. The dude has a i5 2400 like me and a 7970 and is stuttering like a mofo like me with my 670, Everyone starts debating what is causing the stuttering lol, quite helpful to me. Looks likely to be my cpu tho if the 7970 is experiencing the same issues with the 2400, must be a bottleneck. Doesn't mean i dont want to switch to a 7970 still tho smile.gif .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AUz0Fzy-Qs

http://www.techspot.com/review/603-best-graphics-cards/page12.html

"Breaking down performance figures at 1920x1200, the GeForce GTX 680 was just ~1% faster than the Radeon HD 7970, while it trailed the 7970 GHz Edition by a 7% margin. This doesn’t change at 2560x1600, where the GeForce GTX 680 is 2% slower than the Radeon HD 7970 and 11% slower than the 7970 GHz Edition, making the 7970 the obvious choice."

I also doubt the validity of the other article. It shows a pretty decent drop in performance between the 4GB 670 and the 2GB 670. That's not even possible, if the tests are fair. If the timings where worse on the 4GB to accommodate the larger memory you would see the memory performance of the bandwidth drop slightly, but it doesn't. GPUZ reads the exact same bandwidth. Also, those in the heaven thread have been getting same scores regardless of larger memory.

I am in no way saying the 670 is as fast or faster than the 7970. 7970 and 7950 however are plagued with the frame latency issue still. Once we see a review of 13.2 drivers we can see if AMD resolved these issues. I am not expecting massive drops to make my 670 better, however I am taking a guess that frame rates will be a bit more even between the 670-7950 and the 680-7970

I'm running 13.2 testing out Skyrim only. Big difference in smoothness.

Here are the original tests with 12.11 beta. First has vsync on and second off.

Here are 13.2 vsync on then vsync off.

Strangely enough, 13.2 with vsync off gave me a 114 fps average and 12.11 was only 90 fps with vsync off.

That is really encouraging to see. I wish they would have done this back when I had a AMD card. Too late in the game now. Hopefully they keep up the good work with next gen release. AMD seems to be stepping up big time. Hopefully this attitude translates to the next CPU launch as well. biggrin.gif

I'm going to switch out the 670 for the 7970 tomorrow in the hope that its the 670 drivers causing the issue. Will up date when the 7970 is installed. I have a few benchmarks done now with the 670 so will be able to do a direct comparison. Not really to fussed if there isn't a significant improvement in fps or benches tho, really jus looking to alleviate the stutter. Thanks everyone that has bothered to try and help, really appreciate it.

I doubt it'll make any difference, because your CPU is the bottleneck atm. But try it out and let us know if anything changes!

Good luck thumb.gif

Man i hope your wrong lol, but you could be right. My gut tells me its a driver issue so im gonna go with that first and upgrade the cpu shortly, looking at this graph http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/363?vs=701 , i just cant justify swapping to the 3570k without being sure it isnt the gpu. I know that is without the 3570k being overclocked, but still, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page you can see its only a 5-10fps difference between the 3570k and the 2400.

Ah, thats single player, MP is a different story wink.gif

I'd imagine that your 2400 would come in between the 2500K and the 8150 in this chart.
