on your mobo, are you plugged into the sata 1 slot? if the "red" sata III slots are after market via mobo manufacturer, it will result in longer boot times, use Intel's marvel controller. On my mobo, it was specified on which sata ports to use for boot in my manual and it had a sticker on it.

A bad overclock could result in slow boot times, I would switch everything you can to default to find the root of the issue.

not sure what you mean tbh, I just plugged the sata cable into the red sata ports - the manual says these are 6gb/s connectors, so I presumed these are the correct/fastest ones available to me? They are fixed to the mobo and are not aftermarket

I downloaded this SATA driver for Asus Rampage 4 Formula - "Asmedia AHCI Driver V1.3.4.0 for Windows 8 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL) "

do I need to be using a different driver then? I can't find the Marvel controller you mentioned?

this is what is showing in device manager:

Make sure you are plugged into the top two red Intel Sata6g_1 or Sata6g_2 ports not the bottom two ASMedia Sata 6g ports shown in the bottom picture.

Try disabling a few t hings in the Bios/Uefi.

For instance, I have 2 marvel 6GB/s conne ctors, I have disabled the controller which made the boot up go faster as it would not check for devices in those slots.
I have also disabled Firewire and the "non intel" ethernet port wink.gif
