[techpowerup] NVIDIA Lowers Price of GeForce GTX 680 - Page 18

Let me play devil's advocate here for a moment. I'm not sure you realize the problems with overclocking a 680, namely kepler throttle and voltage lock. Voltage lock alone guarantees limited overclocking ability, while kepler throttle will actively reduce your GPU clockspeed in 13mhz increments indefinitely if you pass a 70C threshold. So lets say you get a 50mhz overclock on a ref 680, if you pass 70C guess what? you're done, the overclock is going to be reduced.

I really feel like you believe "the grass is greener". Now, the lightning 680 is the true enthusiast GTX 680 and I love it. But I owned ref 680s prior and was greatly disappointed in the overclock ability for the reasons mentioned above. The bottom line is get the lightning if you want to overclock smile.gif

Also, like you said in an earlier thread - clock for clock doesn't matter when comparing 2 different architectures.

How on earth do you hit 70c on your GTX 680 do you live in hell?

It's pretty easy if you have vsync turned off with 100% GPU load in something such as metro 2033 or crysis 2. Especially in dual GPU configs, which I always use. With the junk reference fan I refuse to put it higher than 50% manual speed. It sounds like a jet at maximum speeds, screw that. I run SLI and having to use insane fan speeds is off the table, not to mention the ref 680 still gets hot unless you use really high manual fan speeds, especially in SLI.

If it doesn't bother you, that's fine. There's also the voltage lockdown so the kepler throttle is only 1 aspect of why I would not use a ref 680.

Yup lol before i put my 670 ftw's under water i would easily hit 70C in Crysis 2 and Metro 2033 and i am sure sli didn't help.

I am not a fan of fan noise so cranking the fans up to much was not an option for me!

No thanks. I'll buy 4 680 Lightnings with blocks before I spend $900 on a GK110 that you can't OC. What the hell's the point of that anyway???
As for me i dont overclock but still upgrading
post #180 of 203
I'll get another 670 when they hit under $300. Who knows, if I get them at $250, I might get 2. biggrin.gif
