Ah, cool didn't know they were capable of potentially hitting that high. I figured the upgrade was more of an itch then a need though thumb.gif

Happy with my 7970GE, keep it at a moderate 1200/1600 as I'm only @ 1080p and it's plenty.

That's a waste of a perfectly good 580 man! Don't upgrade unless you have good plans for your 680. rolleyes.gif

Yeah...a card that's over 50% faster than their previous high end GPU should have been priced at $299...when the 580 was still going for 400ish, when the 580 came out was it also a "mid range" gpu? It wasn't even close to being 50% faster than the 480.

I thought we had covered this subject a long long time ago..
Yes, the GTX 680 IS in fact a mid-range GPU, the GTX 580 is not. GK100 would have been the high-range GPU, but it didn't make it to the production line (well as quadro cards but not as geforce).

OT: About time for them to drop in price a bit.. Now if we could just move on with this generation and get the next one out the door.. kkthxbai wink.gif

Not this discussion again. 550mm2 silicon engineered for extreme top vs 294mm2 silicon that's an extract from the real deal. He's right in a sense however you did get more performance at a decent pricepoint. NVidia has just been milking the crap out of GK104 this gen. Pretty sure that if 7970 came clocked at 1GHz and had the frame limiters software disabled from the start we'd have a cheaper 680 named 670Ti.

God, I hate all this diarrhea about the 680s being mid range cards, they're not. The GK110 cores were reserved for the FX cards because of the specs being more suited towards physics, CAD and rendering calculations. It's just not needed for a consumer who simply wants to play games.
Yes, they may have held out releasing a faster core and rebranding it but at the end of the day it competes at the same or above the 7970. Clearly then, it's a high-end card, not because of the price, but because it competes with the opposing high end cards.

So you can't compare it with the GTX 670 in terms of gaming performance?

GK110 was never intended to be reserved solely for FX(you mean Tesla) simply because they never expected to have every card pass certification, so they were bound to be relegated to Geforce parts. Since GK104 performed better than expected, there was no need to launch a GK11x to the 600-series, rather create a new 700 series as we'll see later this year. Nvidia's entire roadmap ha shifted a year thanks to GK104 and its better-than-expected performance.

It seems like the only people complaining are the GTX 680 early adopters and the AMD apologists.
