Do you like Trophies? How many do you have?

I haven't seen a thread about this so was curious about people's opinions on Trophies. I myself love them and often don't consider a game complete until I have gained the platinum. But I know my housemate last year despised them because they detracted fromthe amount of quality gaming that was experienced. Ie the main focus of Mafia II is the storyline but almost as much time could be spent completing the other trophies as completing the stories.

I'm sorry to say that I actually check the trophy guide and roadmap for a game before buying it to check how much of a time committment I will have to give and if it doesn't have any or most of them are online then I'm less inclined to play/buy the game.

On the flipside though I do get alot more replayability out of my games because of trophies. I sunk over 100 hours into FFXIII-2 to complete it fully and about the same into Just Cause 2 (I just need to finish the hardcore story). Although it has to be said that even with thereplayability some games are just not worth the launch price (Puss In Boots, Assassins Creed III).

Would love to hear your opinions on them. Do you compare yourself against others? Are you a trophy hunter or just like the feeling when one pops unexpectedly?

MAtt

I don't really like them but l'll attempt to get as much as I can. When konami decided to add in trophies for MGS4 I didn't like it but still went and collected them.
The ones I really don't like are ones where it involves multiplayer. Like in black ops 1 you had to kill two enemy choppers with 1 launcher

I would say I don't like them. I haven't really played PS3 so most of what I will be saying is about the Achievements from GFWL / Xbox which I think are the same thing (I could be wrong).

I met a guy a few years ago who I played Xbox with almost daily until he decided to start grinding his game "achievements". Soon he wouldn't even talk to me, let alone hang out, or play Xbox games unless it involved multiplayer achievements were available. He barely keeps a new game for a week before he sells it to game stop and buys another one to get more achievements. Its practically a disease.

Now a couple months ago he hits 100,000 gamer score and I figured maybe he will quit this and go back to being the guy he used to be and hang out and whatnot. Apparently not...

After I was bugging him about how sickening it has gotten, he changes his phone number, email, changes his Xbox gamertag and blocks me from contacting him all together. After I found out his phone number and text him asking whats up, he replies back with a very insulting text which I wont bother to post here.

I understand this is a bit extreme, but I lost a good friend to these stupid things. This guy is over 30 years old and I couldn't believe that something stupid like that happens to someone.

I don't care for trophies unless they are done right. I'm going to max out persona and zero last reward only because I enjoyed the games so much and wish to spend more time enjoying all the content and challenges both games have to offer. I would have done all of these things without the incentive of trophies. I doubt I'd spend more than 5 minutes on getting a trophy in a game that involved an action I never planned to do and for that 5 minutes it had better be a platinum trophy to be worth it.

Yes, I am a trophy addict. I love those platinums. I'm almost done with a few more than I have currently, and I have a huge pile of others I will work on after.

Honestly I couldn't care less about trophies/achievements. I've never platinum'd a single game. Never cared to. Most of the time they are setup in a way where you would never get a platinum just playing the game normally, and they always put special things you have to go out of your normal playing style to get.

Trophies/achievements originally started with MMORPGs, and then somehow got spread to all other games in general via the current gen consoles, and Steam. To me this is a "new age" gaming fad that really doesn't interest me. I play games for fun only. One gripe I got is that I don't have the option to disable trophies. And I do get a few by playing games normally, and I see it as interrupting my gaming experience momentarily by flashing something on the screen they insinuate I should care about.

Would love to hear your opinions on them. Do you compare yourself against others? Are you a trophy hunter or just like the feeling when one pops unexpectedly?

Thinking a little more on it there are times I don't like it when a trophy pops up with nothing else after I've achieved something great like collected all the Easter eggs and place them back onto the basket. I'm expecting a hidden door to open up or the Easter Bunny to return and grant me 3 wishes. What do I get? A trophy. In those cases I don't enjoy them. I also don't enjoy it when they pop up over or during important story parts. If I unlocked a trophy either give it to me before or after.. or allow me to opt out of seeing me getting them at all so they don't kill my immersion with the plot. Would love to have the option to turn them off.

If someone produced a really good game you wouldn't get it if they didn't offer any trophies? It seems like game producers now have so many things to focus on beyond just releasing game content. Some people love MP but not trophy related MP. They love trophy hunting which normally contain spoilers to the plot. So if your game has easy to get trophy and a little MP tacked on the chance of the game selling increases without taking anything else into account. Add a plus 2 or 3 at the end and the chance of a sale gets even higher. And lets not forget about DLC, a few people don't like to buy games that don't include them from the go.

Consider me old school. I don't really care for trophies, normally ignore DLC. When I get a day one DLC code I put it on ebay as I'm not even interested in anything that wasn't suppose to be there from the start. I have MP games that I enjoy playing MP on. I never expect nor do I wish that those releasing my SP games spend the time to create a decent balance MP when they could be focusing that effort in making a even better SP game. However, I would love to have my favorite games sale more copies so that I can enjoy more games that follow what I enjoy so on the same token if they don't give people what they want the sales will go down, even if it is just tacked on. I try to keep that in mind whenever I'm playing zero last virtue and a trophy pops up for me or whenever I'm playing Metal Gear and a MP option appears(or use to) that these things are selling more copies of the game.

I wish I could say at the end of the day we should all do what we enjoy. It seems the people looking for trophies are speaking much louder than the rest of us so the few of us who wish to turn them off are ignored. Samurai BeatBown was released for free yesterday and the majority of what I see on the psn blog is complaints about how the free game didn't include any trophies...

Trophies are enjoyable for a few reasons.

A) If you are competitive in nature they are a great way to compete with your buddies. Me and my best friend kinda talk some smack about "you can't get this trophy it's too hard for you", ect. For Motorstorm RC we could directly compete against each others race times to help us get our platinum, so we were constantly beating each other. We beat each other so much on one specific track that we both had identical times ranked #34 in the world.

B) They can give you a new appreciation for a game. I beat Fallout 3 on PC, along with 3 of the DLC packs. I bought the game of the year edition on PS3 just to get the trophies after, and on my way to 100% I played Fallout 3 in a more thorough way than I normally would, and it was super enjoyable. I actually enjoyed my 2nd play through on PS3 more than my first. This is just one example, but I can think of many.

C) You just feel accomplished. If it's a hard platinum, you really should feel proud, at least I do.

D) Think of trophies as a bonus. For me I don't buy my games entirely based off trophies, but I do find it rewarding that playing the crap out of a wonderful game gets me a reward I can show off.

I probably can't truly explain it to you guys who don't like it, because really I think it might have more to do with the type of person you are, or the people you are surrounded with.

That's interesting that you want to turn them off. I totally get the feeling of wanting something more. Like after you've put 60+ hours on an enjoyable game that was the perfect difficulty and all you get is the pop. It's abit like when Trevellyn dies with one bullet at the end of N64 Goldeneye, anticlimactic.
I just got a platinum on puss in boots and to be honest, I felt dirty. It only took a few hours and I can't help think that they could have made the game alot more involved for the retail price (glad I rented).

I didn't mean that I wouldn't get it if it didn't have trophies but for example I have about 25 PS3 games to play. Alot are old release stage games like Tomb Raider, Resistance and Metal Gear Solid (no trophies) whilst I just bought Gran Turismo and Lost Planet 2 (trophies). I love gran turismo so would play it regardless but I'm debating whether to play lost planet 1 before i start lost planet 2 because it doesn't have trophies. And lots of old games without trophies I feel like I haven't played enough because there's no record to remind me about them.

I think another point that I find is that with alot of modern games the story is often a little lacking in length or quality so the addition of some trophies (which do not take alot of effort to add to a game) can make me play a game for a little longer. Just Cause 2 for PS3 and Assassin's creed are good examples where the story can be completed relatively quickly but the extra content will require alot more time and effort. These requirements were around before trophies because I remember there were photos to colllect in San Andreas to get 100%. Nowadays you just have a useful tool to keep track of these things.

You have a great point when you mention GTA as I've never beat any of these games. Assassin Creed story mission always left me with more to be desired but trying to collect all the small things in the game made it feel more like work. I'd prefer the to have say 500 feathers and of those 500 the requirement would be to gain 250 or 300. Can anyone actually say they could find all 500, assuming 500 is the number chosen, if they didn't use a guide? Same with drake trophy's, who can actually say the found them all without a guide. Nothing at all is wrong with using guides but if I have to use a guide to get the trophies then I don't feel like I earned them.

I can understand why getting trophies in the game listed could add more replay value to said game. And yea, a lot of games did have collections already built in but they are normally around the playing of the actually game. Like Super Mario World(SNES) 100% completion means beating all maps, including the hidden maps. It doesn't however mean running around jumping on 5 mobs, and then jumping over 3, and then flying and sliding into the next two, skip one and jump on the last one...

I just reviewed a few of the trophy list from random games and would seem that some of the challenges of getting the trophies lies not with knowing how to get it but the actually challenge of getting it. My gaming time is limited and I would like to experience as many games as possible during that time. I suppose if I were younger, or had less other things going on I might have found myself spending more time going after trophies.

I just recently got my first two gold trophies yesterday without using a guide. Enjoying the game so much that I found myself wanting to prefect everything. Though I'd think that with Zero Last Virtue, a guide would make the trophies stupidly easy attain since the skill involves figuring out the puzzles.
