Ideas for 775 upgrade #2

Thread Starter
Hi everybody,

I want to help my friend upgrade his pc. he uses an i7 laptop, the rest of his family use an Acer Aspire T136 (Sempron 3300+ 2.0ghz socket A) and he has a Socket 775 pc sitting around (there was a problem with the ram causing a no-boot; fixed by moving ram into proper slot for dual channel mode).

I figure that as computers get older they will have more problems with new technologies and programs using a Socket A pc.

Current setup:

- Intel Pentium E2200 @ 2.20GHz
- EVGA nforce 730i motherboard
- Patriot 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800
- XFX Geforce 9600 GSO
- Thermaltake ISGC 100 or 400 (im not sure which, it may be modded, had a blue led fan on it)
- Power Up Black ATX midtower + 450w psu TC3J-4050P (from tiger direct)
- Windows XP home Premium 32-bit

I want to upgrade this with an emphasis for sound/music editing and creation + movie making + moderate gaming

Here's what i figure would/should work:
- Upgrade 775 pc and install Windows 8 Pro and Linux (either ubuntu or mint)
- move all files from Aspire onto 775 system and reinstall programs

A couple issues though:
- they use itunes and i dont know how the transfer of music works with I tunes
- they have real bad internet connection where they live
- This needs to be done somewhat cheaply

I would really appreciate your 2 cents on how to go about this.

also i learned about thermalright 's MOSFET heatsinks and was wondering if i should / could use those to help disperse the heat on the motherboard. So is it Possible?

Thanks for your input.

what editing software did your friend want to use and for which OS?

adobe premiere and sony vegas should be fine with a dualcore +4gb ram on windows.
after effects will need at least a quadcore and 12gb ram.

Audacity is a pretty good audio recording program for linux. His current 2gb ram is more than enough for mint.
I dont know of any video editing software for linux.

What are you trying to do with the 775 rig?

No point to upgrade CPU unless you find one for a price you like, and that board is a nvidia board which don't OC that well and IMO arnt the greatest to work with. Though maybe I have just seen to much 750i and 780i boards act up in my day. Upgrading the RAM and toss in a SSD(probably will make the most noticeable difference.)

Even with that board you should be able to get 2.6ghz out of that chip, I would try at least.

Really as the guy above sums it up your gonna want RAM for Editing.

Though he is better off using his i7 laptop for editing IMO

Oh and forget about the MOSFET heatsinks, that board isn't good for overclocking at all. Don't waste your time.

@edalbkrad
he is using windows xp home edition 32bit i believe
and yea he had sony vegas installed when I went to fix his computer.

also guess they might fool around with dj programs and music creation programs like FL Studio (I dont know any dj programs).

so i guess that Windows Xp would be a limit as 32bit can use up to 3~4gb
So should Iget em' Windows 8 (Pro) 64bit as its the cheapest os for sale?

@DzillaxX

I guess it would be used for:

-Music mixing (not recording)
- Email checking
- Extremely Light gaming (the 2 largest / only true internet providers havent set up land communications and networking yet. also means almost xbox live coms suck real bad.)
- Video Editing & occasional graphics creation
- Possibly a family file server
- School work
Right now im actually wishing that he had a 750I so i could give him my 2x evga 550ti 2gb for sli.
also what problems have you experienced with the 780i's? i got the asus p5n-t deluxe and want to be aware of possible problems

thanks ill b back after more research

OK 2 weeks later and what have I done???

- got a windows 8 pro 64-bit license
- ordered 4 Evercool heatsinks for about $20 altogether
- looked around for a core 2 quad processor (q6600 to be specific) and i found a few but im not nice enough to spend $70 - $100 for nothing in return
- i looked on kijiji and found other computers for sale with core 2 duo processors and q6600's but again Im not that nice though i do want to buy a dell model and mod the case really badly tongue.gif

My options:
- i could get a friends gtx 285 to replace the 9600 GSO but thats pointless
- i could take my brother's Asus Xonar DG and input it but its currently used
- i have a OCZ Vertex 3 SSD which i could give to install windows 8 on it, i was planning to install i on my brothers pc but i havent figured out the OS transfer thing (even after i got the ADATA XPG SX900 with Acronis True Image HD, Disk Migration Utility, i really hate that thing you know)

Anyone else got any words of advice?
