6870 Trifire vs 7850 crossfire

Thread Starter
Hi guys I'm currently using 6870 trifire in my system but am looking to cut down my power consumption(from the wall)
would two 7850's running in crossfire be comparative in gaming performance ?

I know they outperform a 7970 (but so do my 6870's) but by how much is a mystery..
so I was wondering if anyone has any benchmarks sitting around that may help me make my decision?

at $370 a pair I cannot seem to be able to poke any holes in the 7850 idea especially considering that everyone I normally buy from are almost out of stock of 7970's and the cheapest non reference model is $438

thanks guys:D

6870 trifire is uber vram bottleneck. You are fooling yourself if you think trifire 6870's are beating a 7970. Also, your cpu is bottle necking your 6870's. You have to focus on balancing your rig before you worry about upgrading. And all that running from a 700w tt tr2 psu is just a nightmare.

even at stock speeds a HD 7950 boost is faster than dual HD 6870 CF. overclocked HD 7950 will beat dual HD 6870 CF significantly. HD 7950 will draw less power and run cooler. even in the best cases CF scaling is 1.8x. but on average across many games its closer to 1.6x. with CF you face stuttering issues, poor CF scaling. in few cases games are unplayable and require CF turned off.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_7950_X2_Boost/28.html

1920 x 1200

HD 6870 - 55
HIS HD 7950 iceq x2 boost - 100
HD 7970 Ghz - 115

Also Tri Fire on HD 6870 is a bad idea. tri fire scaling sucks. also with 1 GB you cannot max out games like BF3 with Ultra 4x MSAA as you are going to run out of VRAM and the game would be unplayable. sell the single HD 6870 for 100 bucks. the 6870 X2 can be sold for 150. add another 50 bucks and get the HD 7950

also at the same clocks HD 7950 is 3 -6% slower than HD 7970. so in terms of value for money the HD 7950 is unbeatable. HD 7950 (1100 Mhz) matches HD 7970 Ghz (1050 mhz).

http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=AT-7950BST
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=GA-795WF3G

comes with a game bundle too. go for it. thumb.gif

Im well aware of the major vram bottleneck... but its not really effected at low res..
2gb(the vtx x2 has 2gb of Vram not 1) is more than sufficient for most apps/games at 1920x1080..
and yes at this current point with this motherboard my cpu is a hold back..
but wasn't when clocked at 4.4 in my UD3 (only really relying off the fact my 3dmark score does not improve after 4.4 ghz)

and yes the 6870 trifire does beat a 7970... my brothers 7970/3570k(his stock 3570k actually gets a much lower vantage score than my current clocked 960t) and farcry three are much proof of this. Farcry's vram usage rarely goes over 1.7gb and my frames dont drop below 40... like ever.. wear as his pc drops to 28 frames just walking out of the door at Amaniki village to talk to Dennis...
oh and my 3d mark scores beat a single gtx 680 etc..

besides IM NOT LOOKING FOR AN UPGRADE! im looking for something that provides the same graphics power roughly as my trifire but uses much less power.

I cannot max out games like BF3?
wear did that idea come from?

I play bf3 all the time and all ingame settings are maxed (apart from AA... I use 4x edge detect AA within CCC)
in BIG maps my VRAM (2gb not 1)does occasionally max out when flying jets but that only causes a drop of the frames into the low 40's from being pegged at vsync prior.

and the 7950 was my original choice... but everywhere is near sold out hear and I don't want to pay $380 for one to get it fast..

also the free games they are offering... the ones I would play I have already purchased

*edit*
also thanks for the sites raghu78 but they dont ship to my country frown.gif thanks anyway

Eh...? When did they make a 4gb 6870x2?????

The total vram on a dual gpu board is halved you know...?

I'm just purely going off the amount of Vram that msi after burner displays and actually uses(2gb can be used... 3gb is displayed)..
well and the fact I have no issue playing games such as BF3 that are supposedly impossible to play in 6870's at ultra because of vram limit.

also Im not sure if this card acts like a normal duel gpu card(or like the other 6870x2's) due to the hydra chip?

AB displays the total vram from all cards so you have to do the math ya know? Even if your single 6870 is a 2gb card, you still only have 1gb addressable vram.

yes displays all three gb... and uses 2gb...
like I just said...can I ask you the point now?

*edit*
if I where to "do the math" as you say
it would still only = 1.5 gb max possible usage...
where are the extra 548mb of ram coming from?

*edit again*
alsooo...
when connected through the hydra chip on my 870A fuzion mobo ... 3gb
of vram is usable(due to the motherboards hydra chip I believe)
but the vram doesn't make up for the loss of power from hydra a mode vs crossfire.

now back to topic... does anyone have bechmarks that contain 7850 crossfire in the same benchmark as 7970?

He's right, the x2 has half the amount of VRAM as marketed. Open up GPU-Z and see for yourself. Each core has it's own VRAM and it's mirrored, not added.

3GB -- 1GB for each core (trifire)
