Why is newegg pushing Windows 8 so hard?

Thread Starter
I need a decent Windows 7 laptop for work and it seems like Windows 8 laptops have much better deals on newegg and are much more prominent in searches.

Are there any other decent online retailers that are not doing this that have some good laptop deals?

Every major retailer and OEM is pushing W8.
Once again...

Nothing wrong with Windows 8. And if you don't like the Modern UI, just use Classic Shell or similar.

Windows 8 is actually not terrible. But of course NE and all retailers are going to push it...I'm sure MS requested as much.

I personally used Win8 for a week, to try somethin' new... While I liked new task manager, file copying/moving "bar", faster boot and such.... I hated so many other things, existance of metro, those "charms", faulty extenstion assignation, the forcing of it's metro based apps for everything from picutes, music etc. the way you close stuff in metro, I mean you can close desktop. >.>, the corners of screen being annnoying for multi screen users, non-existance of start menu, windows search sucked, it would mess up my audio when I'd work in stuff like cubase, stuff on my uTorrent just wouldn't seed... I mean you have to work around those stuff a lot to make it not suck (and some things I couldn't fix). It's unintuitive... But my biggest beef was that in a week I was using it, I had 4 BSOD's... somethin' that hasn't happened to me in Windows 7 not once in last year for example. tongue.gif

For me it was god awful experience... I tried it because of all people here actually on OCN saying it's actually good and you shouldn't believe the hate hype. Plus I hate reinstalling everything so I stuck on it as much as I could, but BSOD's were a deal breaker for me. But that's me, on my aunt's laptop it's on for two weeks now and no BSOD's. To sumarize, if you're on a windows 7 you got no reason to get windows 8 (IMO), if you get windows 8, don't believe it's too hard. Now I don't know how it goes, nor do you have to pay for windows 7 full price to be able to downgrade... but yeah.

The extensions/file associations are changed in 20 seconds, come on...

You don't close desktop, just switch.

What was your BSOD code?

What was your BSOD code?

It would just over and over again assign it default to windows even though I change them specifically to X application, when I'm too choose from given application I don't get any suggestions except from regular microsoft apps and maybe I think saw MPC, so anytime I'm to assign something to let's say KMP or Picasa I would have to find it all over again.

About desktop you "can" close it... which is pretty dumb, and the way you close desktop/metro apps is more dumb as well (why would you even need to close desktop, I mean if explorer hangs you wouldn't be even able to do it that way without forcingly closing it via Task Manager or something similar) . And if it weren't for alt tab, the way to switch from apps the... upper left corner etc... god it was just unuseful when you have a monitor to the left.

Didn't bother with BSOD code, it would just show "windows had encoutered and error and needs to restart" for a seconds... thing it even had a "smiley" face, and I've personally had it with it. The thing is... why would I work so much to make somethin' actually function, and to an extension function the way that's more intuitive and easier for user, when I'm using and am used to somethin' that does this perfectly. And it's not that, I'm used to... I don't mind gettin' used to somethin' that would in the end make it better for me, it's just I hate when I'm having to work on somethin' that's by default annoying to make it more like somethin' that was just awesome to begin with.

Doubt I'll be trying windows 8 again until I see issues I've had resolved, and metro being an optional thing. Drivers and software maturing for it...

EDIT: If you've got an XP or Vista... that's annoying you, or you want a change... sure. But to upgrade from Win 7, except for sheer curiosity. After my experience (which was unfortunately (I wanted it to be great, so I for one wouldn't have to bother myself changing it back to win7 again)) bad... nah.

Stardock's Start8 software adds a startmenu that looks and works just like Windows 7's startmenu,; it also skips the metro screen and boots the computer straight to the familiar desktop, and you can disable the "charms" and other corner functions. The software costs $10.

For the new full-screen metro apps used to open pictures or videos, etc., use 3rd party software (IrfanViewer for pictures, VLC player for videos, Winamp for Music, etc.)

I don't know what's with the BSOD's. What computer did you try out Windows 8 on?
