Hi everyone, getting back into it with a budget build!

Hello everyone, I used to overclock my CPUs, case mods, etc.. many years ago but I have not been involved with PC hardware/overclocking for more than 7 years. On christmas day I made an impulse descision to return to PC harwdare and i'm glad I did. So far i`m loving it again, the games look so much better plus i'm having fun!

I was on a tight budget and shopped during the boxing day sales, every item purchased was on sale (with the exception of the Arctic Accelero) plus I'm waiting on some mail-in rebates.

Corsair 200R Case
Corsair VX550 PSU
Asus P8Z77-V LK
Intel Core i5-3570
Corsair Vengeance LP 2x8GB DDR3 1600
OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD
MSI GTX670 OC 2GB
Arctic Accelero Hybrid VGA Cooler
LG 24x DVD Writer
Asus VS238H-P 23" Monitor

It's not much compared to some I have seen but I can play Metro 2033 and Far Cry 3 with settings just about everything maxed out at 1080 with results that far exceeded what I expected so I'm quite happy. But I already have the upgrade bug because I want to try and overclock a CPU again. My next purchase will be an i7-3770K with a closed loop water cooler but I will try to hold off until the Gen 4 Intel's come out.

Here is my attempt at optimizing my rig as best as I could during the past week (found most of my help and answers lurking here so decided to join!):

-On the CPU front, I used the auto-tuning feature in Asus AI-Suite and noticed a small boost of performance in benchmarks. I believe this is about as much as I can do with a locked CPU and stock cooler, looking forward to learn more.

-On the memory front, they are rated CL10 but I read reports that it is stable at CL9 so I set the timings to 9-9-9-24 (stock is 10-10-10-27) and set speed to 1648MHz in BIOS and ensured stability. Noticed a boost in benchmarks, I don't think I can push this much further but I will try eventually.

-On the VGA front, at first I was a little disapointed with the results of this card running at the factory clocks. I saw the potential of this card but without yet attempting to overclock it I was suffering from heat throttling issues with the reference design that was affecting performance. I then installed the Artic Accelero Hybrid water cooler (and modified the shroud to keep the stock VRM heatsink) and the card came alive. Instantly the card was now stable at its factory speeds and delivered. I have since overclocked the card mildly with +75 core and +300 memory using Precision, temps are ~23C at idle and max ~55C under full load with fans at 30-60%.

Ok I think I've rambled on enough already, here are some pictures of my budget build!

Case shot, I zip tied a 120mm fan below the video card shooting up at the VRM heatsink because the Accelero fan that is supposed to push air on the underside of the PCB is pretty much useless (even at 80%). Arctic recommends that you fabricate the fan shroud out of paper but even with a custom plastic shroud that is more robust the fan does not push air past the cooling block and through the VRM heatsink).

Custom made plastic shroud to cover fan and direct air flow (required for Accelero on short graphics cards) made out of the thin plastic used by file folders found at the dollar store. It really only serves to hide the fan and make install look clean.

Accelero Hybrid shroud modified (cut shorter with dremel tool) to clear the stock VRM heatsink

Thank you, but it didn't start out this clean though tongue.gif Hiding all the cabling behind the motherboard was practically never seen many many years ago, cases never had such great cable management features. I remember buying rounded IDE cables to optimize air flow and sleeving to cover up PSU cables (only the really high end PSU's used to come pre-sleeved) to tidy up the case. I only noticed after I had built the entire PC that my case was essentially designed to have good cable management so I tore into it and re-did all the cabling. And I'm glad I did because now I know I've got unobstructed air flow plus it looks a lot better! thumb.gif
