Outdated on new tech, Help me on an i7 Build for a Friend $1.4k Budget

Hello guys, been a while since I have signed in. I am looking for a build for my friend since he was looking to get an Alienware.I am trying to sway him away. He is studying Architecture and will be using CPU intensive designing programs (3Ds Max, V-Ray, AutoCad, Sketch Up). Haven't been up to date on whats new, so will you point me to the latest tech.

His budget is around $1,400, he wants high end system to reduce his rendering times. He may do light gaming. I will put up what I know and you cant point me what would be better.

CPU - $322 Intel i7-3770K (six-core too expansive for the build) http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-3770K-Quad-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B007SZ0EOW/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1358400231&sr=1-1&keywords=i7-3770K

MOBO - Depends on the socket since sandy and ivy are different sockets? For sure I would prefer an ASUS board have no problems with mine, feel free to recommend any other brand .

Memory - For sure he wants 16GB cant sway him that he doesn't need that much lol. Anything from Corsair or G.Skill would be good.

Video Card - No idea on this one I was thinking Nvidia since there more optimized for rendering. A GTX 670??

SSD - My Samsung is running good or the M4 is better?

HDD- Samsung Spinpoint 1TB??

Power Supply - Corsair or Seasonic I suppose if it can fit in the budget.

Case - $100 NZXT Phantom Red http://www.amazon.com/NZXT-Phantom-Tower-Gaming-Case/dp/B006I2H08E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1358399488&sr=8-1&keywords=phantom+nzxt+red

CPU Cooler - Probably a close liquid loop what good these days?

Optical Drive - Just for the sake of having one.

OS - Win 8 worth it?

Est. Total = $422.00

Feel free to point anything I might have missed.
Thanks

- Sandy Bridge and ivy Bridge both use the same socket: LGA 1155
- Check if those programs benefit from Nvidia cards, or if your friens like playing games with the highest settings
- SSD: Samsung 830/840 is the more popular choice as it's a little bit faster than Crucial M4's, but both SSD's are very reliable
- HDD: Spinpoint F3 1TB is a good hard drive
- CPU Cooler - it depends on how much your friend's computer will be overclocked. If the Core i7 will be overclocked only up to the mid 4 GHz then stick to air cooling (Cooler Master 212+ or Evo are popular) any higher will need liquid
- OS: Depends if your friend like Windows 8 or not

I need recommendations for a 1155 motherboard. Anyone? Budget was raised to $2,200 including monitor.

I would look at the Gigabyte Z77 motherboards as for RAM Kingston is so underrated and no one gives a damm about Kingston anymore which makes little too no sense as they are by far the most reliable RAM out there Corsair/G Skill and can suck a fat one compared

Last i think the deal on the PSU is limted time deal

Would he benefit more with the i7-3930K 6-core CPU, than the i7 3770k?

Also debating GTX 680 vs the Quadro 4000? What would benefit him more, hes an architect student. I posted the programs he will be using in the OP.

Also would an IPS screen benefit him more???

I am gonna post a preliminary list in sec build will be done by next week.

The Hexcore 3930K will drastically out perform the Quad core 3770K in Video encoding & data compression, as well as other multi-core optimized tasks.

From Tom's hardware.com's 4770K(Haswell i7) preview, 3970X performs equal to a 3930K with a 200mhz Overclock(3970X & 3930K perform near identical at the same clock rate).

From Tom's 3970X review, at the same clock 3930K is about 20% faster than 3770K at handbrake video encoding.
