Looking for a game similar to the original "Thief"

Hi guys.

I was a huge Thief fan back in the day. I loved the setting and the fact that your character was not a really good fighter face to face.
The game made you focus on concealment and surprise attacks from the back. None on this running straight at your foe swinging away
like some crazy guy. You had to be sneaky sneaky, and I loved that. Shooting water arrows to turn out torches. Learning guards patrol paths and timing a sneaky move to get around them. That was so much fun.

Is there a game out today with more modern graphics that is similar?
Please let me know.

Thanks

Sounds like Dishonored could be for you

I wouldnt touch anything in the Theif series after the first one.

The MGS Series(Less so with MGS4), Dishonored to a certain extent, Deus Ex, and Deus Ex Human Revolution(Invisible war was a joke), Earlier Splinter Cell games to a degree.

Cant think of anyting else right now.

Thanks guys.
See for me the problem with skyrim is that the sneaky part of the game is under developed.
Sneaking is not effected by light sources. Only by how fast you are moving and what type of armor you're using and your sneaking skill level. That is really not enough. Thief had all these things plus light levels and walking surfaces being loud or not. Plus in skyrim you can always have at least a 50% chance of just hacking your way out of a bad situation. Skyrim is really not up to par with thief on the sneaking front unfortunately.
But this splinter cell sounds interesting. Is it a modern setting or old world?

Thanks

Splinter Cell is modern world and definitely focuses on stealth for most of all the games, although there are parts that you simply have to just spray bullets. Lighting is a big part of hiding in the game as well as air ducts, climbing pipes, buildings, etc. They are definitely satisfying games though, worth playing for sure!

Assassin's Creed 3 is actually quite similar in some ways, with a bit more freedom and maybe less sneaking action.

other than that it's like already mentioned probably metal gear solid franchise or splinter cell. but that's just because they're sneaking games, other than that i don't think they're similar at all.

There really haven't been any good stealth games since Thief. Sorry.

Unless you can dig a 2d sidescroller. If so, grab Mark of the Ninja on Steam immediately.

What's wrong with the 2nd one? Basically the same game only more refined. I mean lets face it, the graphics of the first one were terrible, even for a game from 97 and the AI was passable, but not anything great.

You can play Dishonored very stealthily, so you might want to check that out. You can play it aggressive and violent, but don't let those videos turn you off, the game can be played all in stealth.

I loved all the Thief series and played the crap out of it.
Splinter cell sneaking is almost identical as thief....however Dishonored feels more like thief as far as atmosphere goes.
You cant go wrong with either game, both are excellent. The sneaking system in Dishonored is not as precise , but it's "ok" overall.

I know there was talk of Thief 4...I'm really hoping it happens.

It's been so long since I saw anything interesting from Eidos that I forgot who they got bought out by, and my heart sank for a moment when I considered it might be EA.

Squeenix has been doing very well with their PC ports lately, so I am now officially anticipating this.

Edit: I keep forgetting that Eidos did Deus Ex: HR. Silly me.

I sure loved that game. I still have a Win98 PC, Pentium lll 500 that was my first Asus MB, that I think will still boot up to play the original Thief. PSU may be out on it now. I downloaded many dozens of fan-made Thief missions from http://www.thief-thecircle.com that worked to keep the game fresh. Those missions varied from classic Thief style missions to stealthing robots in outer space. Downloads were on dial-up back then and some 20MB missions took all night to get. Nuthin like the good ole dayz....
