The "I wanna build log too" machine, insert creative name here.

Sooooooooo its been about 6 rigs with various stages of completeness since I've actually posted any kind of build log. Mostly because I've been going through phases where I wanted to try something out and it didn't end up looking like anything I wanted to share. tongue.gif

Anyways, I figured I would document this one as best my HTC 8x can. I wish I had a fancier camera but I don't at the moment, so it will have to do. The purpose of this machine will be folding for OCN and gaming, so it needs a powerful CPU and GPU. Since I already had one of the two, I set about getting myself a processor that would do good double duty. If you think I heard the call of the hex cores (again), you'd be correct. I managed to get Fry's to price match me a 3930k with Microcenter for $499 and off I went!

The next big decision was to water cool or not. I have done many water builds, and decided I just don't want to deal with it. This allowed me to pick a case that is slightly smaller than my previous Switch 810, and also has sound proofing for quiet operation, the Fractal Design R4. I originally wanted to buy the Phanteks TC14, but I don't like super huge air coolers. Lucky for me, the NZXT Kraken X60 lists case top compatibility with the Fractal R4! I scored one of those at Fry's as well, the last one on the shelf.

I very nearly bought the Rampage IV Extreme, but I decided 1) I didn't want to spend almost as much on the board as the CPU, 2) Red is so 2012, and 3) I trust Asus RMA about as far as I can throw a bus. There were a few other options but I like simple no-frills boards and from what I've been seeing the Gigabyte X79-UD3 has finally come into its own with the F12 BIOS, so I'll give it a shot for $239.

Here is the current hardware list:
  • Intel i7 3930k - Have
  • Gigabyte X79-UD3 - Have
  • 16GB Patriot DDR3 - Shipped
  • EVGA GTX 690 - Have
  • Samsung 830 128GB - Have
  • Samsung 840 250GB - Have
  • Seagate Barracuda 500GB - Have
  • Fractal Design R4 Arctic White w/Window - Shipped
  • NZXT Hale90 850W - Have
  • NZXT Kraken X60 - Have
  • Windows 8 Pro 64 bit - Have
  • Arctic Accelero GTX 690 - Need to order

So, that being said my general theme is going to be white with green accents for the most part. I am attempting to source up some fans I want, more to come on that later. Also deciding on lighting for the case, not sure if I want to have it lit inside or not.

Of course, nobody wants to read lots of stupid ramblings, so here is a picture of the stuff I do have sitting pretty in the boxes. More to come this week as the rest of the parts arrive, I expect building to commence by Friday minus the fans I'm hoping to get. biggrin.gif

Also, (*&^%$(&^*%UIHGFDKSJF@(* &T*&TUYG I don't want to import my images, I host them on my photobucket for a freaking reason.

Update time! My case and RAM arrived, but unfortunately the RAM is stuck in my apartment managers office until tomorrow.

It came!

My little helper decided to investigate...
WP_20130117_008_zps742bd7ad.jpg

This case is absolutely gorgeous in person, I'm very glad I finally got it. I've been eyeballing it since the window models came out.

Factory got a little froggy with the torque on the panel screws...
WP_20130117_006_zpsa2cc8cf8.jpg

The side panel is super thick metal and has soundproofing, feels very solid. I am impressed at the quality for $110.

Thats all for the moment, I'm going to continue on after dinner.

Nice build! I have an R4 myself, and I absolutely love it. Smart choice going w/ the UD3, I heard the new BIOS allows you to have better overclocks.

Personally, I would've gotten a smaller, more efficient power supply, but the NZXT unit is great.

You should experiment w/ fan positioning on the bottom next to the PSU, if it fits, for better cooling for your GPU. I put the stock rear fan on the bottom, and left the CPU cooler exhaust the air out of the case.

Thanks! I really like this case, although mine seems to be defective on the top panel. The metal isn't straight so it bows out or in depending on how you push it. Not really a huge deal but annoying.

I have the machine running right now as I type this, but I don't know if I will get the big batch of pictures up tonight. I still have more parts to order, mainly fans and the Arctic Accelero for the GTX 690.

Also, I am sad to report that the Kraken X60 did NOT fit the top of the case. Well, to be specific the radiator fits but there is no room for the fans by about 2mm, it hits the top most USB/PS2 ports on the motherboard. Since this was the case, I had to get a little crazy because I was determined to use this thing.

Update! Also, about halfway through I switched to my dying Sony Cybershot in hopes of getting somewhat better pictures.

It seems I was wrong, my RAM was delivered to my neighbor who came over and gave it to me while I was still checking out the case.
WP_20130117_011_zpsc32ff0e4.jpg

So now its time to start building. I started with moving the back fan to the front and adding one of my white spectres in the back.
WP_20130117_012_zps89f90d9b.jpg

Next item on the list is the power supply, this nice looking white Hale90. I wanted to put this in first so I can hook up the AC power cord and have the case grounded.

Looking good so far, now its time to open up the motherboard... there is a lot of accessories for a $239 board!

This was a pretty quick install, although I had to undo it later. It starting to look like a real PC, CPU goes in next.
DSC02653_zps470aa41c.jpg
DSC02658_zps55930bb1.jpg

I decided to attempt to mount the Kraken X60 now because eyeballing it told me it wasn't going to fit, or be very very tight... and I was right. The radiator fits but the fans don't. I don't know what liquid state bearings are, sounds fancy...
DSC02657_zps5a6b320b.jpg

So now theres a problem. I can't fit the cooler.. so what to do? Mod the front so it will fit there. I took out the bottom hard drive bay and did a little hot knife action on the retention nubs for the fans...
DSC02660_zps35f30863.jpg
DSC02659_zps1e855eff.jpg

Once I did this, I was able to fit the NZXT fans on the front and screw the radiator in through the bracket. The dust filter even fit!

Update part 2...

About this time I realized I was going to have to do something to fit my hard drives in, since I no longer have a cage. Luckily I use two SSD's and one 3.5" hard drive. There are two 2.5" mounts on the back of the motherboard tray. I had to take the motherboard back off of course, but thats fine. I broke out the old Silverstone 5.25" to 1x 3.5" and 2x 2.5" drive adapter and put my HDD up in the optical bay.
DSC02668_zps7c388c57.jpg

Now its time to install the RAM... I'm really liking the green low-power suttf (1.35v)
DSC02664_zpsfa3fa2c7.jpg
DSC02665_zps12c7bf36.jpg

After that, I put the canned air to the 690 which I have had for a little while and cleaned it out. Install that next.
DSC02666_zps6e88184d.jpg
DSC02667_zpsc399ac94.jpg

Now I struggled with wire management for about 2 hours, trying to hide everything behind the tray with no HDD cages to stick the wires behind. That combined with two drives on the back really made it tough. I will go back and re-do this in the future I think. Lots of zip-ties.
DSC02669_zps1cf3e4b4.jpg

Its ready! Time to hook it up and power it on! *cross my fingers nothing blows up or fails in the first run...
DSC02670_zps9f72cb29.jpg

And its alive! Nothing went wrong this time, booted right up and immediately flashed to the newest BIOS which I had downloaded before I started along with all of the drivers.
DSC02672_zps3efd3274.jpg
DSC02671_zps72403978.jpg

Closed up the case for now, I have a few more parts to order before I do anything else. Temps seem to be really good on both CPU and GPU for the small amount of fans I have installed. I re-installed the foam noise blockers in the top fans spots for now.
DSC02673_zps10e9ca06.jpg

Overclocking and benchmarks coming tonight.

I have the same issue w/ my R4. I got over it b/c most R4 users have the same issue.
Your mod was very clever. I would've just returned the thing if I got into that issue lol.

Heck no, I was gonna make it work! Now its time to figure out why the NZXT Kraken control software won't install.

Wow this rig looks awesome i dont really like white myself but even i have to say that looks very good

You are also one of the few users i have seen that has a NZXT HALE 90 series PSU i love that PSU worst thing i ever did was to sell mine and buy a Corsair AX

Also you have a NZXT Kraken X60 will you buy better 140mm fans for that?
