4.0 GHz at all costs, please! (PII X4 980 BE) - Page 6

I have had 3 denebs and one thunban all have gone past 4ghz like Ive benched some at 4.2 though with air cooling I did not get desirable temps hence I kept them at 4.

Try raising the cpu nb vid, I know this may sound weird but I had the same problems at 2800 mhz cpu nb below 4ghz it ran fine at lower cpu nb volts but beyond 4 it was not stable so you might try rasing the cpu nb volts, play around with different settings you are bound to get there sooner or later but being a 980 this should have clocked a few mhz higher than the other denebs I suppose, I could be wrong though.

A Deneb core is a Deneb core. They are binned by the MHz they maintain stability at and then issued an OPN based on that, not by what they can overclock to. A 980 is no more likely to overclock any better than say, a 955.

the 980BE will end up with a higher overclock then the 955BE because of the base clock speed
but I get what your saying in the overclocking itself and results..

Base clock speed is irrelevant. Just because a 980 has a higher base clock doesn't mean it will OC higher.

so your trying to say that a 955BE @ 3.2GHz can overclock higher then a 980BE @ 3.7GHz and it's overclock from there..?
show me. rolleyes.gif

that 0.5GHz advantage is too much of a margin to make up..

The end result was 4.21 GHz, which is about 100 MHz below what Phenom II X4 975 achieved when it was reviewed, but still a nice result for Deneb core. Results vary from sample to sample, but we have seen most C3 Deneb cores pass 4 GHz maximum clock.

Source is techpowerup's review of the 980. I think what Mr. Scott is trying to say is that yes, within a stepping it's possible to see the same clocks. The 955 has seen two different steppings, C2 and C3, so you could be correct in your example too, technically.

And well, as the OP of this thread and with regards to my own 980, I can and must admit that it's not like this is the first time I've run this CPU at non-stock clocks. I've owned it for two years now, and much as you were able to tell I'm not much of an expert at this kind of thing.redface.gif

Potentially, yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Example:
http://hwbot.org/submission/2224953_mr.paco_cpu_frequency_phenom_ii_x4_955_be_4935.3_mhz
http://hwbot.org/submission/2307771_shrimpbrime_cpu_frequency_phenom_ii_x4_980_be_4715.79_mhz

Both on water, both from my team, so I can guaranty neither of these were sandbagged.

it's all good..
I happen to still be a fan of the 980BE and 1090/1100T chips, I wish I would have kept one in storage.. smile.gif

@ Mr Scott - no offense but I do not base anything off of potential, I too have had these chips in-house and have benched..
I go everytime with the 980BE over the 955BE and in a normal setting, not some under extreme cooling.

cheers.

Water is not extreme cooling.
Potential is everything. Why do you think people bin?
Again, luck of the draw.
