How much TIM to use on 3770k die?

Hi all

Just today got myself a delidded 3770k, im going to apply some new TIM, specifically col labs liquid pro. Is this stuf safe to apply directly onto the cpu die and should I use it on the IHS too? Ill be using it with megahalems cpu cooler, which has: nickel plated aluminum fins, copper heatpipes, extruded aluminum base block and copper base plate.

Is LP safe to use here?

thanks

Also whats the safest way to clean off current TIM thats on the die and IHS? toilet paper ok?

Not sure what you mean by LP, but to remove the old TIM using some isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth (paper towel usually is better than toilet paper). Anything will work but just make sure there is no lint left on the die when you are done cleaning.

When you apply the new TIM use a very small dab on the center of the die. An amount somewhere between the size of a grain of rice and a pea. You should not put any on the heat sink's plate. Make sure you don't over-do-it with the TIM as it will actually cause bad temperatures. Just use the amount I described after cleaning and you should be great!

Its okay to use Liquid Pro on the Die but i'm not too sure about the heatsink.

EDIT: Its okay to use it with your heatsink i guess. Heres what the website says-

"Liquid Pro is especially recommend for nickel-plated copper"

Lp is liquid pro.

I don't have that alcohol stuff, all I got it something called CPU TIM clean, which says it is a citrus based solvent.

Also what do you mean by don't use any Tim on the ihs, surely there must be some on top of the CPU heat spreader to make contact with my CPU cooler base?

about this much,

haha..jk ..jk .. biggrin.gif

a little drop will do,

wait, you saying your cooler has exposed alu pipes? "extruded aluminum base block"?
you cant use liquid pro on alu!
you can use it on the die, no problem there, the ihs is made of nickel plated copper..

I'm confused, what cooler are you using? You place the TIM on the cpu die, then install the heat sink on top of it and the pressure from the heat sink spreads the TIM across the CPU.

Is LP safe to use between the contact of the heat spreader and CPU cooler Von Dutch?

I half remember reading when this stuff came out people said it can't be used on certain CPU coolers

I'm using prolimatech megahalem. I k now I need some Tim on the CPU die, but I must also ned some Tim on top of the ihs to make contact with the CPU cooler base too?

Edit, just realised I think you think I mean I'm having direct die contact with my CPU cooler. This isn't what I mean, I'm still using the 3770k heat spreader, just it has been delidded that's all.

Oh wow I totally missed that part, sorry about that. Check out this link though, looks like the guy used the exact components you are.

Hopefully that helps. But yes you will need TIm on the die as well as on the spreader, or "lid"

It should not be used on aluminium, gallium and Al react badly. As long as your hs is copper or nickel plated copper you are good to go. You can search the tube for examples of the reaction.
