Are Internal DVD Drives a thing of the past?

Thread Starter
My new rig is pretty much complete and all of the 5.25 bays on my HAF-X case are full except for one which is partly occupied by my 360mm radiator so I can't use it. Next one down is my DVD drive. I have been watching a lot of videos on Youtube while building it and on TimeToLiveCustoms Tom Logan said that internal optical drives were "lame" and on LinusTechTips Linus said something along the lines of "No serious rig builder would use an internal drive". Thinking about it more I can't see why I need it, and if I removed it , it would save me a power and SATA cable.
So what do other people think?

Let's ignore the garbage you hear people say online for a moment and focus on yourself for a second. Good. Now ask yourself these:

"Do I use my optical drive? How often have I used it in the past? With things like USB flash drive boot, will I need it in the future?"

If you can justify from those questions you don't need the optical drive, then yes - it is a thing of the past for you; throw it smile.gif

I cant remember when was the last time i've used optical medium. Since my 16gb usb stick (5-6years or so) satisfies all my needs.
My new rig allso dont have ODD. Instal your OS trough USB.

I hardly use my optical drive.... and what i use it for can also be done with other kinds of storage devices.
Anyways its totally up to you if its not in the way and you might need it why not leave it there.

Personally I removed mine from my Gaming PC, all of my software is downloaded, and windows installs are must faster on a bootable flash stick...

I have no reason to own one, however it really depends on the individual and their needs...

Consider a USB slim external drive?

Well I would like to have a custom Power/Reset button panel in the bay occupied by the ODD. If it was external I could use it elsewhere and as I said it would remove 2 cables.

I'm one of these strange people who like them, I work with many older people and its just so much easier to hand them a cd (still cheaper than thumb drives)

but it depends on YOU, my gaming rid did not have one and I was given a game for Christmas that entering the code on EA's website did not let me download it...I've had problems with torrents in the past, so I ended up using my wifes rig (also doubles as a cd/dvd duplicator when needed) and networked on of the cd drives so I could install it on my gaming rig...was kinda a pain so last time I was up at microcenter I picked up a $10 dvd/cd drive.

for the most part on my home rig (the cd's at work dont count) I prob dont use a cd drive but 2/3 times in a year but when it comes down to those 2/3 times Its really worth it.

also the computers I've built for friends I usually leave a ODD out and almost every single one of them has come back and asked for one because they needed it.

its personal use that drives the need for it.

Same.

I sometimes like it better than Steam/etc

I have slow internet, so installing from the disk is much faster than downloading ~5GB of programs

You never know when it might come in handy, and it doesn't really cost much either. Not having a drive is pretty stupid if you ask me.

The blu-ray drives are quite nice too ^^

havent used an optical drive since 2006
was outdated then and adding a new name with different optical reading = still trash
if it isnt on flash, or on the net.. i can do without it.
