I just got one of these (S2740L) direct from Dell at under $300 a few weeks ago when they had one of their frequent sales.Beautiful understated looks and the picture really pops. Accurate colors and great viewing angle.
Using it from 4' the 1080p resolution is fine for me. You can see some ghosting with the PixPerAn LCD monitor test program, but I don't notice it in Far Cry 3 and other games. Black levels aren't the lowest but you can still see great detail in movie dark scenes.
Glare might be an issue in a bright room (I have heavy curtains to keep down reflections), but I prefer that to the heavy anti-glare coating on other monitors like my older Dell 2007WFP.
I prefer the 'standard' video setting in the menu, but with the default brightness turned way down, YMMV. The stand isn't adjustable for height and the inputs are a pain to get to, but it has a VESA-compliant mount if you want to use a different stand.
If you're sitting up close then maybe a 24" would be fine, plus you'd save a bunch, but I really like this monitor. I use it for games and movies and this seemed the best value for the money to satisfy both applications.

(Sorry, just saw the question was re graphic design - regardless, it still may be a good fit, or maybe the 24" would be better at short viewing distance if you don't go with a cheaper Korean hi-res display and chassis looks are not that important)
