Whats going to be the cheapest one? And why would the supplies be low? People think that this is AMD's "lifeline" (even though it isnt) but theoretically, if it was, why would they not produce enough?

The Core 2 Quad Xeon at 1.66Ghz will be priced at ~ $460.

The reason there will be shortages is, AMD will have to produce two of these chips for each package. So supply will already be 1/2 of what AMD would normally be able to do. Everyone knows AMD is having trouble keeping up with its demand. This will just add further strain. Plus it is a FX chip... (and making two chips can't be economically sound for AMD, meaning it is just a delaying action until K8L?)

The reason why there was channel shortages is Dell took AMD by surprise with orders for Turion's, so they had to quickly switch production to mostly Turions. Now that they have it straightened out a bit they shouldnt have the problems they did before, or at least to the extent. Im sure they have also been stockpiling the FX's for 4x4.

You are sure of it, but you don't know do you? AMD will have trouble producing 2x the yield they had to before... guaranteed.

I have a feeling that's not actually a fact. It fact, it's a stupid lie.

So much bickering..

I think a lot of people got disillusioned by the C2D. When they came out they lived up to their claim that they were ~30-40% faster than the A64 X2s. It would be moderately unreasonable to assume that AMD is going to come back (within 6 months, mind you) with something that is 30-40% faster than the C2D or QX6700. The best AMD can hope for at the moment until K8L is to catch up or at least come close to Intel.

AMD and Intel have different release cycles so it isn't always easy or accurate to compare technologies in between these release cycles. I'll be the first to admit that AMD seems to be hacking something together, until K8L comes out. But keep in mind these 4x4's aren't meant for everyone, just superheavy multitaskers, so I think they already know they are trying to impress a niche market.

As someone said before, your comparing new 65nm chips to 90nm chips that are almost 4 years old. Obviously this puts Intel on top for the time being but 1 year on top is relatively pale, since they were 2nd best for almost 6 years.

That being said I am glad I'm in the position of being ready to upgrade this time next year. Lots of exiting and new things will be out by then (and hopefully software to take advantage of it), and true comparable technologies will be available.
