MSI 7950 Twin Frozr III 960MHz Default Clock

Thread Starter
I'm on my second card as the first one was overheating and unstable out of the box anytime it was put under load. A re- installation of the heatsink would have probably corrected the issue, but I felt better just exchanging it through Amazon since it is quick, easy and free. I did notice there was a small scratch on the heatsink near the power connectors, but I seem to recall the original card having the same "scratch". The packaging on both cards appeared to be original, and untampered with, though neither had any "tamper seals".

I now have the replacement card and it is fast and stable. The default clock is showing as 960MHz GPU /1250MHz Memory. I haven't tried overclocking it yet, but all stress tests and benchmarks run without issue. All the spec sheets and literature I've seen on this card says the default clock is 880MHz GPU / 1250MHz memory. I'm wondering if this is normal or there was some recent update? It reads the same with 3 different drivers and in Afterburner and GPU-Z.

I'm not terribly concerned at this point, more curious than anything else.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

edit: added that default clock on my card is showing as 960/1250 in Afterburner and GPU-Z

Not sure, if it's a refurb card, possible the existing owner edited the BIOS?

EDIT: Your card BIOS is different to mine...

There is a BIOS switch on the side of the card (near the crossfire finger if memory serves me right). Why don't you shut the computer down, flip that switch and report what clocks you register.

Looks like you got some strange card. If you input that BIOS code, you get other GPU-Z submissions with the same default clock:

Why didn't I think of that, just switched from 1 to 2 and results are the same. 960/1250. Afterburner shows the same results as well. 3DMark shows the card as a "Generic VGA Card" or some such thing, as described http://www.overclock.net/t/1348884/msi-7950-twin-frozr-iii-reads-as-generic-vga-drivers/0_30.

Not a big problem but I'm curious and wondering about the anomaly.

Sounds like you got a second hand card. The previous owner flashed the bios. :-) But if its working well then just keep it :-)

Yeah, I reckon you got a pre-loved card with a custom BIOS flashed. If it works, cool biggrin.gif

Well, if that's the case, would both BIOS 1 and 2 likely be flashed? Now I'll worry that the previous owner flashed it and returned it for some reason. Also wondering if Warranty will be affected. I've not had good luck with ATI cards' longevity in the past, so that little voice in the back of my head will bug me for awhile. Oh well, thanks guys.
