[Scratch Build] Project: "I'm bored and want to build something" Aluminum and Acrylic Case

Ever since I first got into computers I've wanted to build my own case. The first rig I ever built was put into a scratch built tech bench until I could get a real case. Needless to say, I've progressed quite a bit since that plexi and wood bench. Then a few years later I was bit by the watercooling bug and upgraded to a 700D, which has served me well over the past two years. But now I feel I have grown out of it and am ready to move on to the next stage. I fell in love with the horizontal motherboard option of the MountainMod cases but could never justify spending that kind of money on a case.

So onto the real reason I'm here. I've been tossing around the idea of building a custom case from scratch for the past few months but was undecided on the design and material I wanted to use. I finally have a good enough idea on what I'm going to do that I think a build log is necessary. I will be transferring my current sig rig into this case, along with a few minor upgrades, upon completion.

Finished dimensions of the case will be 16" x 18" x 24" (W x H x D). I will be using a combination of 1" square aluminum tube and 1" aluminum angle for the frame and .093" acrylic for the panels. The majority of the material is scrap left over from multiple jobs at work, so the only cost will be the acrylic panels, paint, and a few other small items. I will most likely be cutting apart my current 700D in the process and salvage what I can to use in this build.

The finished product will have 2 480mm radiators exhaust in the bottom area, 4 120mm front intake, 2 140mm side intake, 120mm rear exhaust above the mobo I/O, and 3 5.25" bays.

This will be my first scratch build of this magnitude, so any tips or suggestions are more than welcomed! thumb.gif

Current quick mock up made in Google Sketchup. The bottom opening will be covered with a black mesh
Note: still learning my way around Sketchup, so nothing too extensive there. Still have to figure out what I'm going to do with the Motherboard tray.

I got all the aluminum pieces cut and started test fitting everything tonight. I had one bad cut in the bunch and don't have the proper tooling at my house. I'll have to wait until tomorrow at work to cut a new piece. So I'm as far as I can go tonight.

Looks good, I kicked around the idea of a horizontal mounted mother board but decided to do reversed. I think that may be next months project, hahaha.

Subbed!

I made a lot of progress yesterday. I got the new pieces cut while at work. Drilled and tapped the holes last night and got the frame put together. I finished the cross beams to hold the motherboard tray. Just have to get holes drilled and tapped in the frame so I can mount those. I also made a rough version of the motherboard tray and rear I/O bracket. I didn't have time to get pictures, but I will post some later today when I'm not busy. So far everything is going together much nicer than I was anticipating. Once I get everything test fitted and finalized, it will all be taken apart for painting.
