I think you mean profit, console buyers aren't really aware of whats under the hood of their consoles, thus it won't really affect sales in any way. Basically those who like Sony will get PS4's and those who like Microsoft will get XBOX 720's.

Virtually no console makes a profit from hardware, but generally the worst hardware wins.

It isn't really that "worst hardware wins" but rather that the console that is first to the market and has the best games library wins. It just tends to be that more powerful consoles are late to the market like the Sega genesis was to the Super Nintendo, like the N64 was to the PS1 or the Xbox to the PS2 or the PS3 was to the Xbox 360.

The N64, Xbox and the PS3 where all pretty much a year later then there competitor and so the competition was always one step a head of them in terms of games.

The only reason why the PS3 was able to out sell the Xbox 360 at the end was duet to the ridiculously long life of the current gen. Really if you ask me they should have rolled out the next consoles at the very latest for christmas 2011.

Wrong, the Wii outsold the 360 and was to market a year later.

True but I would say the Wii is the exception not the rule. Nintendo really where quite clever by not competing directly with the other consoles and rather going after the casual gamers and people who where not really in to games (Wii fit ect.)

For me, the only console games worth getting are usually Nintendo's first party titles.

At least 75% of the games on the PS3 and Xbox are also available on the PC, which is unanimously the superior platform. Nowadays it's all about making games for every single system so everybody has the same opportunities no matter which console they buy---what kind of competition is that? Nobody was playing Sonic the Hedgehog on their SNES back in '91.

Because nearly every game is available for nearly every platform, it's become a war of "raw computational power", which is pointless for two reasons:

1) PCs will win this war every time

2) CONSOLES SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE POWERHOUSES.

I've said this tons of times and nobody seems to listen.

The entire purpose of a video game console is to put SOME of the power of a computer into a smaller package. The software should be carefully optimized to squeeze every drop of performance out of the consoles.

Instead, we're gonna have games designed for the 720 and PS4 being sloppily ported to the Wii U, leading misguided consumers into believing the latter isn't a capable console.

Wii may have sold a lot of hardware, but consider only Nintendo was one of the few actually making money selling games for the damn thing. The Online store sales are only a fraction of what psn and xbox live sees, and 3rd party games on the system were never that great. Nintendo may have made some good money compared to the gamecube, but they never had a cash cow. At the end of the Day the 360 is still making more money then them all. Xbox live itself is a cash cow, and considering the 360 is the strongest contender in 3rd party games and is the lead platform on most games as well it is easy to see that they have had the most luck this gen.

If anything software sales have been the worst on the Wii, and for a lot of people the actual time spend on the Wii is a lot less then the 360/ps3.

I think everyone is missing the key issue here. If Microsoft release a 720 with a massive brass trumpet attached to the side of it, people are going to buy it.

And where is it now?

They outsold the 360 by 20 million and sold a tonne of games, the best selling one for the 360 is Kinect Adventures (18 million as a packed in game for Kinect) whereas the Wii's best selling non-pack in game is Mario Kart Wii at 32.44 million sales. (as of March 31, 2012)

No matter how you look at it, Nintendo dominated MS and Sony in the ways that matter.

As someone that used to be a console-only gamer, my eyes were also opened: I can play and enjoy both! Between my PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Wii U, I have about 40 games that you won't find on PC. Throw handhelds into the mix and that number skyrockets to a staggering 65+ games. On top of that, I don't even own all of the consoles games I'd like from this generation. Try half, at best.

On PC, I've bought maybe 20 current generation games, and most of them aren't exclusives. PC exclusives just don't do it for me, but I usually opt to get multiplatform games on PC, especially shooters.

As far as I'm concerned, there are tons of amazing games no matter where you go, and anyone skipping either PC or consoles are really missing out.
