One of the biggest things that adding phases does is decrease the current per phase and in turn lower temperatures. You can reach a point where this is just unnecessary either way and has no bearing on overclocking (i.e. MVF vs UP5).

If you're a tweaker, you will most likely get a very similar overclock on both. It really depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it.

I see but MVF was already my sort of last choice probably because it is the most expensive of the four I've listed, well to say the truth I was waiting some more fight between Asrock Z77 OC Formula vs MSI Z77 MPower, and the gigabyte UP5 is starting to grow on me biggrin.gif

I have the ASRock OC Formula. I was debating between this and the maximus and don't regret the decision I made.

Don't believe to most revies. Although I like Techpowerup review of UP5, let's go over some of the "thumbs downs"

I am not sure whether the tests were performed with stock or OC settings, but some boards like to increase base clock, or push Turbo boost multiplier higher than by Intel specs.

True, but this board run out of PCI-E lanes, nothing can be done.

Why this is in negatives at all?

Voltage read points compensate for that.

MPower has 6 phase analog VRM doubled to 12 with no offset overclocking support. It has a decent feature set for its price like dual-band WiFi.

OC Formula has digital 6 phase VRM doubled to 12 about the same as on UD5H from Gigabyte. It doesn't have any extra perks to justify its $240 price tag besides various software tweaks. Nonetheless, it overclocks very well and has few records.

UP5H has true 8 phase design as I mentioned previously with 2x better mosfets than on MPower and OC formula. You also get a headphone amp, thunderbolt, and dual-band WiFi. It holds the records for the highest base clock for Z77 right now.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The only real disadvantage of UP5 is limited fan control.
Actually SupremeFX on MVF is worse than ALC898 by some reviews.

Holding the record for Highest base clock has little to do with choosing a board for his and non extreme overclockers needs. As with other stuff like this, only relevent to extreme users... You should be discussing functionality and usage

Sure. That's when UP5 also wins by offering headphone amp, dual-band WiFi, and thunderbolt. The other boards offer one or the other, but not both. MPower is the cheapest, so that's why it's my second choice.

I've never said its bad for oc'ing, what I said is under air cooling and water cooling maximus v formula is performing better,it has a much more tweakable bios and stability wise it rocks.

I know that quality of phase also counts but I don't understand why so many number of asus haters here, man whats wrong with m5f? Its a great oc'ing board, great bios, has good audio, great stability, thermo fusion(though you may won't need it).
According to me despite being good on paper z77 up5 don't deliver as what it should,in fact 2friends of mine are using z77 up5 and 3 other friends are using maximus v formula and according to all of them maximus v formula is giving better stability and has helped them to achieve higher clocks under air over up5(I know oc'ing depends upron the processor too,but keep in mind what I said,I've concluded this after having a look at 5different setups).
