Just Got a Visiontek eyefinity 6 Radeon 6870 2gb for free.What next?

At work they were giving away lots of old parts and i was able to snag a Visiontek eyefinity 6 Radeon 6870 2gb graphics card.

it looks exactly like this

it has two six pin connectorsfor power and i dont know if we have that on my sons power supply, but im wondering if i NEED to use both six pins for this?

Any other useful info would be great if anyone has any experience with this......

ps here is a quite from Visionteks website regarding the power for this....its fairly clear, yet unclear to me...

Code:
•500 Watt or greater power supply is recommended with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connector required (700 Watt and 4 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

The PC will likely still boot without the additional power connectors attached as some power is delivered via the PCI-e port. However, it may blue screen, or just run at degraded states when stressed due to insufficient power if you leave one (or both) of the 6-pin connectors detached. You can get molex-to-6pin adapters, I believe, but I honestly cannot recommend anything beyond a power supply capable, natively, of supporting the card. One can be had for probably $30, though, so definitely worth the investment.

Congrats on the free card, btw! Must work for a cool place smile.gif

i do...i really like my job and the people i work for, thanks

In the way of Gaming,im hoping that this would perform a little better than your average radeon 6870,these arent cheap.

you could pick up something super cheap (corsair cx430s go for like 15 bucks after rebate) that can run that thing no problem if his current psu isn't of high quality

right now he currently has an antec earthwatts 380 which only has one six pin connector.but i could swap mine with his....

Im wondering what i could get for this thing too...if it were a normal 6870 i dont think i would be curious, but this is a more rare,6 displayport 2gb version.....

Any ideas?

The CX430 is what i was thinking of as well. "500W recommended" is probably just protection against the crappy 500W PSUs out there. A good PSU less than 500 (like the aforementioned Corsair) will be fine.
I wouldn't expect to get more than $100 out of it after shipping and fees.

That Antec would be pushing it. You could always try it out (you'd need one of those molex-to-6pin adapters).

Here's the Corsair. $20 after rebate.

If you want to use it, I say you buy a molex to 6 pin adapter, underclock it to 6850 levels, then undervolt it. It'll still perform well, and your PSU will probably handle it just fine.

Out of curiosity, what CPU would be in this machine?

I'm not sure how much it's worth, but these 6 displayport cards are intended for business users, and will certainly be marked up. You could sell it, get a 7770 and probably make a profit.

earthwatts 380 is actually fine for that card in a system. check power consumption here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/290

and if you want to sell it you can probably get a bit more than normal for it because there aren't may cards that can do 6 displays like that

Hey all just wanted to update this thread and ask a question.

I ended up selling the 6870 on eBay for $275

I'm wondering if someone could concur with my logic on what I want to do next?
I sold the 6870 and got $275.now we want to sell my sons 6770 for around $100

Which brings us to around $375.
we can purchase an evga gtx 480 for 140$ which will leave us enough cash to upgrade my sons phenom 965 to a vishera 8320 for 179$
Below is the specific 480 I want to purchase
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130552
My sons motherboard is an Asus m5a97 evo which worked well when testing a buddies 8320 in it.
With all that being said,do you guys think this is a decent idea?

I realize the 480 is 3 years old but still benchmarks in the top 10...

Is this sound reasoning?
