There's a significant taper. It's actually nowhere near that thin.

It is at that point. The edge is 5 mm thick. But still, you won't be able to put a GTX 680 or 7970 in it, that would be the same as trying to put one of those GPUs in a laptop.

BTW, it uses mobile CPUs, not desktop. The iMac is basically a non-portable Macbook.

The iMac uses desktop CPUs. The latest generation features 3570/3770s, if I remember correctly.

Edit: Appears as they use desktop CPUs, but the S-series.

I like the idea of the iMac. It's about as powerful as one of those ridiculous beefy "gaming laptops" and it comes with a nice big screen for people with bad eyesight (such as myself redface.gif).

What I DON'T like though is how the Mac Pro has become the red-headed stepchild of Apple. If you want a powerful Apple machine, you really don't have much to choose from. Even the highest-end Pro is only the "best" hardware from what, 2008?

It is obviously thinner than the older model, which was also running hot under load - as to be expected. My air cooler alone has the "volume" of the 23" imac tongue.gif
That said, I don't think they use mobile CPUs, but lower-voltage (S) desktop CPU models , and opting for mobile GPUs.

Yes, imacs were always about looks, but as intel, nvidia and amd shrink their designs, eventually you do get unprecedented power for something that looks not much different than a 27" ipad.

It's not about staring at the side. If you have a common 30" deep desk, do you want your monitor/computer taking up 1/2 or more of that. I'd rather keep the desk clean and have it wallmounted and still not be sitting right in my face.

So a 3-4" width wall mount based one (much, much bigger then this thing), is now "in your face"? Mind you, 26mm is a hair over 1" thick.... I really don't think anyone here would say 1" is just too in your face, yet it's still a good deal thicker then the 5mm currently used. thumb.gif

Secondly, you're not going to overclock this so as long as the parts are in spec what does it matter? Not to mention, everything is warrantied.

Comes with a 680.... not for gaming...? What does this thing do again? Even if you use it for CUDA based apps, that GPU is going to get hot.

Moral of the story is there is no excuse for the poor cooling when the sacrifice is literally in MM's

Yeah, the Mac Pro is kind of pathetic. My guess is they'll trash the whole lineup in their next event.

You might not be able to fit a desktop card in it; you could possibly fit multiple mobile cards and/or far superior cooling.

The iMac's i7 is clocked at 3.4GHz. The highest-clocked mobile i7, the 3940XM, is clocked at 3.0GHz.

The Mac Pro has needed a "proper" update for a few years now. I think the last "proper" update was 2009.

Aye. It's not. I get that. However, many of use cannot understand spending hefty amounts more for less performance.
