After staying up late watching the presentation, I'm sold. Some graphical stunners were shown.Day 1 purchase for me.

Meanwhile, a Linux OS that the PS4 will have will require minimum RAM. My laptop boots up using Arch Linux, with a full UI (DM) with just 50MBs of ram occupied and the OS is ready to be used. Windows 7? 2.4GBs.
What? Windows only uses about 1.2gbs of ram while idle, right now I have firefox (three tabs), and Workaholics playing in the background (MPC). 1.7GBs of ram being used out of 8. I can bet whatever OS is on the next Xbox will be way more efficient.

According to "rumours" from kotaku the next xbox OS takes up more room, more to it.

a jaguar core IPC is roughly only 15% more than bobcat. So that 1.6GHz 8-cores is roughly about the speed of 2x core 2 quad @ 1.4GHz.

thats assuming everything scale perfectly which it doesnt in the real world. i expect the CPU performance should be equal somewhere in Core 2 quad 2.3-2.6GHz

thats all assuming AMD is comparing jaguar per cores to per bobcat cores. Not per module. If it is per module = half of that ...zomg.
Consoles are just so much better at being efficient.

PS3/Xbox 360 are release @ high end spec @ year 2005/2006 are only to get beaten by PC 1yrs later. Core 2 quad +8800GTX are still capable to run any console port games @ low detail @ 720p lol. thats on PowerPC/cell optimization.

This gen? It is on x86. so the optimization gap will be narrower. I think you only need to look after ur RAM + VRAM and ur GPU. a 2yrs old 2500K will run anything these console port games throw at it. biggrin.gif

Heck I even think 6GB GTX TiTan will hold itself pretty well on any console port games like 8800GTX did on PS3. thumb.gif

I told you the site, go find it yourself tongue.gif

Here is another

http://www.redgamingtech.com/xbox-720-durango-vs-playstation-4-orbis-comparison-of-latest-hardware-specifications/
Quote:
The Playstation 4 Orbis went the route of extreme memory bandwidth, 4GB of GDDR5 RAM, giving huge amounts of memory bandwidth, 176GB/s to be precise. This is a stark contrast to the route that Microsoft went with the Durango, where they decided to go for 8GB of DDR3 RAM. which nets them a mere 68GB/s. Before we go any further, it’s worth noting that the Playstation 4 Orbis, is rumoured to be keeping 512MB of its 4GB total in reserve for system functions (i.e. the operating system). The Durango on the other hand is also likely to take a similar approach, a figure of around 1.5GB reserved has been banded about, but it could be more. This memory is reserved allegedly for media functions, giving further evidence that Microsoft aren’t focusing their system on being purely for gaming only.

There were some rumours from Sony that they weren’t happy with 4GB of GDDR5, and instead were looking to bump that number up to either 6 or 8GB – but this is extremely unlikely.

For anyone who didn't see killzone trailer

IMO, they will target a max 500$ or they will sell a high end console at a loss. if they release killing games like uncharted 4, a msg or other good game, they might have a chance

Going a little off topic here, but... I think the problem with the Vita is there are no games for it... I'd love to buy it, but the games just aren't out there yet. It actually disappoints me that it isn't being supported. It's a powerhouse for a handheld... still wish they would get rid of the touch screen / touch pad gimmick crap. If I wanted to play Angry Birds, I'd use a tablet or my 'smart' phone.

False.

x86 yes, but a custom chip so no API's.

On the other hand, they will be even more efficient than before, because devs already know how to code in x86. They are still coding for only one platform.......so that means accelerated dev time.

And beaten by what? The 8800gtx is twice as fast as the RSX, more than twice as fast. The PS3 had a graphics chip from early 2005. Your comparing a massively more powerful chip. The G80 was a game changer.

A PC will always be worse off than a console due to programming API's. The upside is that you can spend an exhoribtant amount of money on more powerful parts to make games look far better than the PS4 will be capable. But at that point.

I can spend $400ish on a nice gaming machine, or I can spend $1000 for a mid grade PC, well over $2000 for a high end PC. Oh and the "well the PC does more than just games" argument is total BS= I can buy a $100 machine from micro center running a core 2 that will do "everything else". You are paying those obscene amounts of money for better gaming fidelity, nothing else. Oh, if you use it for work? Nvidia and AMD will shaft you with pro cards that easily eclipse 1k per card and CPU's that bust the $900 mark.

The PC's strength is it's open endedness. You simply cannot compare it with a console.

Only a Luddite will sneer at a console. A significant amount of power for only $400? What's not to like?

I was looking to buy Crysis 3 for my system. As a benchmark, nothing else. Banchmarking is fun. My gtx 670 is going to die a smoking death running Crysis 3 on my 2560 x 1600p monitors.

The PS4? At the reveal, im already looking into what cool games to play so I can be entertained. I don't care if x component is too slow, I care about the games. My steam library is massive. I still rather play my PS3. Sometimes you don't want to deal with settings and crashes and all that other crap.

Since there is so many unhinged people out there on this forum, let me throw this out.

Mobile technology is accelerating far faster than desktop tech. For every dollar spent on desktop innovation, $20 is spent on mobile hardware. Where do you think this is going to end up?

MY PC IS FASTER LOL

Who the hell cares. Our machines are getting kicked around by smaller, tech, better innovation. Phones are nearing the 2GHZ mark, has discrete graphics already eating at the bottom of integrated gpu's, screens with far more PPI, mobile platforms that get updated by the day, not by the month. Only a fool will say that such devices are inferior in all aspects to a "desktop"

In short, people should appreciate consoles, instead of lambasting them.

We can and will lambaste consoles from a technology perspective all we like. Consoles are computation systems just like PC's. This is OCN, not GamingSystemsAreUs.

So we cannot compare PC's to consoles yet half your post is on why you think consoles are cheaper/more convenient than PC's. thumb.gif

Personally, owning a PC is just as much a hobby as gaming on said PC. If you think your PC is little more than a console with mouse+keyboard attached, remind yourself what site you are on, you may be in completely the wrong place.
  • Reading reviews + watching videos regarding hardware.
  • Having a large array of hardware to choose from.
  • Content production (work/art/entertainment).
  • Having specialized hardware (go render CAD on your PS3, please) suited to different markets based on user needs.
  • Building a computation system by oneself. You use your brain, you learn, you understand.
  • Tweaking settings to suit your personal tastes.
  • Modifying PC hardware.
  • Modifying PC software.

Those are just some of the reasons a PC is better than a console. Any of the above that can be done by a console, a PC can do better.
A console requires less money and less brains.

I am a conceited elitist. I am a PC enthusiast.
