what is your max budget ? the Gigabyte HD 7950 OC (900 Mhz) with 3 free games can be had for £235

http://www.dabs.com/products/gigabyte-ati-radeon-7950-hd-800mhz-3gb-pci-e-hdmi-windforce-3x-oc-7XN5.html?q=hd%207950&src=16

this card is atleast 10 - 12% faster than tahiti le at stock. with overclocking at same clocks you are looking at close to 20% faster card.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Club_3D/HD_7870_jokerCard_Tahiti_LE/31.html

HIS HD 7950(1210 Mhz) - 82.9 fps
club3d HD 7870 tahiti le (1210 mhz) - 69.8 fps
HIS HD 7950 (950 mhz)- 67.5 fps
club3d HD 7870 tahiti le (975 mhz) - 59.2 fps

if you are on a tight budget the vtx3d hd 7870 is a good option. comes with farcry 3 game. the cooler gets loud with overclocking

if you want a good cooler wait for the sapphire HD 7870 XT to come back in stock at overclockers uk thumb.gif

the sapphire hd 7870 xt (tahiti le) can be had for £190. much better cooler than VTX3D HD 7870 black edition.

Is it worth spending more to get the 7950 or does the 7870 give decent frame rates etc?

the hd 7870 tahiti le performs very well. whether you want to spend 50 bucks more for a HD 7950 boost is your decision. HD 7950 boost would be 10 - 15% faster at stock and 20% faster at the same clocks. see the comparison of HD 7950 boost and HD 7870 tahiti le a few posts above.
