FPS drop across all games making them choppy/unplayable - HALP PLS!

Hi there,

My rig had been running fine for about 12 months before I encountered some fps problems. So for the last 3 or so months I have been experiencing FPS lag across all the games I play (CoD4, Cs:GO, BF3, ARMA2, PS2, NS2 to name a few).

With some games its more noticable than others but it's just choppy and something is visibly wrong.

Something weird I have noticed when playing CoD4 is that I can hold 250 frames (which looks fine as well, not choppy) while spectating someone, however when Im actually playing it is sparadic and very choppy,

My original build was this:

Gigabyte z68P-UD3
Intel i5 2500k
Gigabyte GTX560ti
2x4gb g.skill ripjaws
OCZ 650w

Today I went out and brought a brand new MSI GTX 660ti PE as I thought it would solve my problem (assuming it was GPU related). Put the 660 in and still getting the same problems immediately.

Ive tried fiddling with a ton of settings in the NVIDIA control panel, but no dice.

So, what on earth could be the problem?! RAM? MOBO? CPU (i hope not)?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this problem has been driving me insane for so long. I plan on getting some new corsair (2x8gb) ram next week in the hope that might solve the issue!

Use MSI Afterburner to lock your frame rate.

Maybe you picked up a virus or otherwise installed something that's hogging CPU cycles.

May want to consider throwing a fresh copy on windows on a spare HD and seeing if that fixes the issue thumb.gif

Thanks for the replies guys. Im in the process of reinstalling Windows as we speak. Hoping this will fix the issue, if not I'll report back.

Whats the average temp my core's should be running at under fullish load?

Reinstalled Windows yesterday, had no luck at all with that.

Going to buy some new RAM this week and hopefully a new 120hz monitor. It may well be my monitor thats causing the issue seeing as it's >3 years old.

run a memtest and check your ran, use a hdtune type program and check the drive that everything is installed to in order to see if its healthy

I highly doubt its a monitor issue

VGA? 60Hz? 32 colour bit?
Did you limit your fps?
All correct chipset drivers installed?
Bios at stock values?
Tried older drivers for the GPU?

Currently using DVI-D to 120hz LG monitor with 32 bit colour.

Didnt limit fps. All correct drivers installed and bios at stock (before and after windows reboot).

Also tried a few different drivers with no luck.

Will do a hd tune tonight. Is memtest hard to run? I tried to do that yesterday but couldnt work it out, I think due to it being an .iso. Suppose I could just use that magic iso program yeah?
