How much cpu power do i need for gpu folding?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of moving my graphics card to another dedicated folding rig. I was wondering if you guys knew how much processor power I would need to achieve max points folding on a gpu. I have a gtx 480 mildly clocked to 800mhz. The dedicated folding rig would have a AMD Athlon 3700+ single core, clocked at 2.2ghz. I hope this is enough.

You shouldn't see any difference in folding with a Fermi card in that rig than you would in a newer system.

My 5 month run as the #1 Nvidia folder in the Team Competition was with a water cooled GTX580 on a cheap AM2 micro ATX board, with a Phenom 9650 CPU and PC800 RAM from a 5 or 6 year old HP Pavilian I butchered up for parts.

Caleal is right, I too ran a Fermi (460) in a very old system, 3GHz single core P4, and the output was the same as when I moved to a PHII system.

Does it require an extra 6/8 pin power connector? Only thing I can think of. Usually the low GPU util is an AMD driver thing. Only other thing would be to re-install drivers if it had another GPU in that PC before hand.

It requires one 6 pin and one 8 pin, which are both plugged in. It's a fresh install of windows with the lastest nvidia drivers. I'm installing a ton of updates right now (108), so I'll see if maybe that was the issue

Get rid of the latest drivers and install 266.58 to avoid problems with drivers. I'm not sure how the latest Nvidia drivers are working for folding but the driver have a very chequered history for folding and some brake it.

I'll try that out thanks. My gpu usage goes up to 99% for about 30s, then goes back down to around 10-15%, and repeats this.

Whats the CPU usage look like during these GPU usage drops? Check to verify that the fahcore-_15 process isn't asking too much of your CPU.
