lol I'm using some old ass PSU fans and I just want to make them **** but still be running and still haven't got time to build it yet

As long as you're aware of the currents you're working with and the limits of the rheostats, you should be alright. As mentioned above, it's a crude implementation of a fan controller. If you want something that won't be a power hog, go with pulse width modulation (PWM). A PWM fan controller uses a couple IC's to give short bursts of power to your fan. It's much better than the rheostat, but is also a bit more work.

hum, interesting. My fans are 0.05A and i'll buy a PWM and test them both with my PSU station. Thanks for the alternative

The only rheostat I could find that could handle my Delta 130CFM fans was like 30+ bucks. not worth it IMO. better off getting a fan controller.

You don't buy PWM.. you have to build one. Designs were included on the site I provided before.

damn, alright fine I'll check out the planes and try it out, but on piloux's cases he used rheostats :?

Basically the only advantage of using PWM is that its possible to control the fans via software and it also allows you to monitor the fans. With rheo stats you can measure the fan about +/- 15% of stock speeds. Once you reduce the voltage accross the fan enough, the fans onboard PWM will not emit a strong enough signal to be detected and your fan will read 0rpm (This is assuming your fan has rpm measurement). If your fan doesn't have RPM measurement, there is little point in PWM IMHO.

ok well skrew the PWM but thanks for suggesting it , currently caught up making my own sand blaster, I can make a log if anyone wants.
