[Case Mod] Yogini ! EDIT : Final pictures in post #10

This is my first case mod and very excited about it!

Back story: Building a new comp for wife and the case she liked was way beyond my budget at this point. So, found an old e-machine mini tower laying around and decided to put stuff on it. Then I got to thinking and decided to make a simple mod to put some mesh in the front to allow some air in. That seeded an idea to make a Yoga themed case - wife is big time into yoga.

Components that will go in the case are:

1. AMD A8-3870K
2. MSI A55M-P33 motherboard
3. Either Antec 350 watt or a Cooler master 650 watt PSU (have both with me).
4. Crucial M4 128GB SSD.
5. G-skill 4 GB RAM (will yank 4 GB from my sig rig....sigh)

Future upgrade

1. Another SSD.
2. 8 GB RAM
3. A good AIO cooler

I stripped the case to every piece possible. The idea is to make a front panel out of thin aluminum. Cut a lotus flower bud at the bottom. Underneath that will be a 120mm fan drawing air. The power supply button will be another lotus flower. On the side panel will be a cut out of a yoga pose or a yoga Chakra (have not decided yet). On top will be 3 yoga chakra. There will be 'stem' connecting the lotus cutout at the bottom of front panel to the lotus flower that will be power switch.
The case will be painted white. The case will be powder coated white. The chakras will be colorful (yet to decide what colors). The front panel lotus cutout will have mesh behind it. The 120mm fan behind it will have blue led. The power button lotus flower will be either blue or black with blue led light seeping around it.

Some pictures. I hired two creatures with double the potential output (or are they?)

Patter that I am cutting on the front panel

After much dremel and filling, I have my pattern cut.

Well, my first attempt to paint aluminum is failzor....guessing I did not do enough prep-wok.

1. Sanded with 600 grit paper followed by 800 grit.
2. Washed it good with brillo-pad. It got its own soap on it.
3. Tacked it dry (DID NOT USE RUBBING ALCOHOL OR ANY OTHER MINERAL SPIRIT)
4. Hit it with Self Etching primer. Let it dry for an hour.
5. Hit it with a coat of Rustoleum gloss white enamel paint. Applied thin coats at about 2 minutes interval until the surface is covered.
6. Let it dry for 24 hours.
7. AND I can peel if off with my finger nails ! HOOORAY !!

This is what I used my first go:

I am going to strip the paint down, and this time I will make sure to tack it down good with some mineral spirit. I am not sure if I still need to wash it with a conversion chemical or can I just wash it, say, vinegar. I decided to use this on my second go:

Very slow progress due to work schedule. But I got the front panel and side panel painted. I am doing a cutout on the side panel as well. I decided to paint the interior deep blue (since it is going to be a white and blue theme) and will sleeve all the wires with white sleeving. Ordered 50 ft of that from parts express with about 4 ft of heat shrink tube. Here are a few more pictures.

Well, the meditating person cutout in the side panel is not going so great. I messed up during cutting and the guy is sort of asymetrical. It is bugging me to death. It will be too much filing to get it straighten out. I am thinking I will just cut out a big window and put acrylic and do something fancy with the acrylic itself. Perhaps tint it all, but leave the center of it untinted in the shape of a meditating person. And then have LEDs in various position of the meditating person to represent the 'chakras'. Just as an fyi, chakras are supposedly energy point throughout your body. There is one in your forhead, one in your throat, one in chest, and so on - total 7 different ones. I decided not to paint chakras on top of the case - will make it look too busy. At any rate decision, decsion on what to do with the side panel.

Another update, microcenter indeed sucked me in and I picked up a CX500 PSU and a H55 cooler for the build. Will post pictures soon.Think I got everything I need component wise.

Been a while I posted some pics. I did make some progress. Things I have done so far:

1. Painted the interior blue.
2. Sleeved the PSU.
3. Installed hardware.
4. Installed front LEDs and got a front button. Still not quite happy with how big it is, but hunting for something different.

To do:

1. Get side panel window. For love of god, I cannot cut straight even with strapping the panel down. Will post pics to help me out what to do. It is not bad, but it is jagged enough to bother me.
2. Bling up the side panel windows. Have not decided yet how I want to go about designing a meditating figure in the side panel and have LEDs light up in the appropriate places. Wife likes bling (girl thing I guess) - so planning on using some crystals to make the shape I want.
3. I need to find some RAM with blue heat sinks - perhaps some Corsair vengeance.
4. Need to clean up the inside a bit more.

Issues:

1. Other than cutting straight, I am learning the hard way how difficult it is to paint. Orange peel is my biggest issue. Somehow managed that, but for some reason, my paint chips off too easy. Not sure I did not do enough prep work. I had to re-paint a few panel twice and also had to touch up some chips. Guess need to do some more research on this. First time paint job really.

Anyway, here are some pics:

After much delays due to work and other needed stuff around the house, I think I am finally finished with this project. My first ever case mod. My wife is very happy to have her computer back and happy to have a custom made rig made by her own husband ! biggrin.gif Here are some pictures.

I JB welded some bolts to the metal design and then bolted it to the acrylic.
